ESXI 6.5 GPU Passthrough Quadro Host Rebooting

$

Hi All,

We are trying to get lab environment to test GPU Roughcast to VM's working before going live.

I have built a HP DL380 G8 server which is fully up to date with bios patches/firmware etc. I have installed ESXI 6.5.0 as the host OS and under this we have a Windows VM running windows 10 fully up to date inc anniversary update.

I have created a pass-through for the Nvidia Quadro K2200 graphics card installed on the server and all is working fine from a VM point of view it sees the card all drives installed and works perfectly for our use.

The issue I have is if the VM runs for a few days and then we reboot (long term plan is scheduled reboots at night). The host goes into a complete panic and reboot's itself before the VM has even had a chance to shutdown obviously something is not right with the config.

I have done lots of research and have tried playing with various settings etc to try and make it stable for reboots but cannot seem to make it work. I have tried 6 initially and then went to 6.5 off the back of a forum post regarding instability on v6 which I did see during setup not just at reboot stage however 6.5 seems much better other than reboot.

Really after any advice from anyone which has tried to do the same on things for me to check.

Log files are not really giving me much around the reboot time it's like it simply stops dead.

I have passed the audio device through to the VM however on 6.5 it looks like you have to do this as it is a dependent (which was different from 6.0).

we are looking to try and use this in production come January next year so would love to iron out the kinks before we shell out for a live system as I cannot have it rebooting like this when live.

few forum posts suggest going back to 5.5 with the latest updates as this became alot more stable and win 10 is still supported as an OS.

I am willing to send log files etc to try and help solve the problem.

thanks

Lee

I have 3 Esxi 6.7 hosts on Essentials Plus licensing. Using standard switche. All connextend to shared NAS storage.

only one of the three hosts successfully connects via iSCSI own connection. The other two esxi 6.7 hosts cannot connect To the same NAS datastore. . All host configured identically

what may be wrong?  Why does only one host connect to the NAS while other two will not.

vCenter 6.7 connects successfully to NAS DATASTORE

Hi,

I do not know if this is a bug or such a feature of ESXi 6.5, but I decided to write on the forum. The bottom line is that on ESXi 6.5, if you run the following commands in python, we get an exception:

>>> loop = asyncio.get_event_loop ()

Hi there,

I've got the ESXi on ARM fling running on a Raspberry Pi 4 (8GB) and it runs fine but I wanted to be able to see what temperature it is running at.

Is there an easy way of doing this?

Display problem while RDP in Windows server hosted on a VMware ESXi 7.0

Hello,

Im having a weird issue on which I already lost a lots of time and I can't seems to find anything online about that.

Here is my issue:

I have 15 Windows (Windows 10, Windows server 2016 and Windows server 2019) hosted on the same server (ThinkSystem SR590 running VMware ESXi 7.0). When we connect in RDP to one of those server we got some severe display/video glitches. I have another server of the same model on which I moved some of those Windows with Veeam quick migration and on this host I don't have the issue at all. Before that I was with VMware ESXi 6.7 and when I switched to 7.0 I did a full install thinking that would solve it without success.

Those VM where previously hosted on Hyper V and I used Vmware converter to switch them over to VMware.

Does anyone here ever got a trouble like that?

Thanks

vswitch does NOT appear as a network adapter

I've currently got 2 vswitches working in my environment for connectivity to seperate LANs.  I'd like to create a 3rd/4th.  I've configured the vswitch, same as the original 2; however, when I go to edit the settings on a VM and click the down arrow to choose a network adapter, I am NOT seeing the 3rd/4th vswitch.  A friend helped me setup the original vswitch, so its entirely possible I've missed a step, but am curious why I don't see the new vswitch listed in network adapters?

I get the same 2 original vswitches ONLY.  I've tried mutliple vm's but no dice, they all look the same, so I'm thinking it has to do with my vswitch configuration (but only a guess)?

thanks

ESXi 7.0.1 'DevicePowerOn' power on failed with Nvidia Quadro P400 passthrough

I've updated from 6.7.0u2 to 7.0.1

(HPE-ESXi-6.7.0-Update2 to (Updated) HPE-Custom-AddOn_701.0.0.10.6.0-40)

In an attempt to be able to pass through an Nvidia Quadro P400 to Linux guest.

In 6.7.0u2, Linux could see the GPU, but not "correctly" (nividia-smi not reporting card, but shows up with lspci)

I've read about the passthrough changes in 7.0 and have created a new ESXi 7.0 U1 virtual machine from scratch.

The GPU is marked as active passthrough in the host hardware

The VM is configured with UEFI bios

I've added the GPU as a "Dynamic PCI device"

Although does seem odd at top level to see:

I've reserved all the guest OS memory

This GPU only has 2Gb...so nothing fancy there in memory allocations.

This card is max 30 watts and no "extra" power connections.

Since trying this on 7.0.1 I cannot even start the VM as it always fails with:

"Power on failure messages: Module 'DevicePowerOn' power on failed."

I see nothing in the logs that would explain the failure.

As soon as I remove the GPU from the VM, the VM will power up without issue.

I feel I have to be missing something obvious as this "should work", but I'm currently at a loss.

I've attached the log and vmx files.

TIA for any help.

clone Vm with snapshot

I need to clone VM but I have to keep all snapshots in vCenter 6.0 (ESXi 6.0) environment, so I thought to create new datastore where I'll copy all content from source datastore.

But when I add to inventory new virtual machine I can get issues ? Duplicated VM ?

What do you suggest me please?

I was able to boot the “Raspberry Pi 4 EEPROM boot recovery” and then built the UEFI SD card but it never boots to the Raspberry Pi splash screen – my keyboard is wireless – do I need a physical keyboard for the disk to recognize the “ESC” key presses?  Or is something else wrong?

     Hello

I would really searching a answer for my questions for the flash copy using Vmware enviorment, can anyone answer my questions?

we have two enviorment prod and DR enviroment

we have assigned 200 gb lun to production and we formwated as vmfs and then allocated to VM's as vmdk file ( around 5 volumes including C drive)

Now we have Flash copy made available on DR environment, now my question is.

if we do rescan on DR environment with after enabling re-signature, does VMware will still recognizing as VMFS volume?? of 200 GB flash copy lun and can we get all VM's in that datastore? - any issue from the duplicate volume identify prospective from IBM storage?

I have same questions like below discussion but that discussion not answered hence questioning again in new discussion

Hello everyone,

I would appreciate any help with documents and guidelines on how to recover
flash memory VMware ESXi 5.x server running in the Mother-board on IBM x-series servers.

Haven looked up some documents, I noticed that there are recovery CDs up to ESXi 4.1,
but no information on how or what tools to use for the recovery of versions above
4.1.

Please point me to documents describing the procedure.

Thank you.

for my ESXi 7 host

[root@localhost:/tmp] chmod 755 /etc/init.d/xorg

chmod: /etc/init.d/xorg: Operation not permitted

it looks like a new security feature on ESXi 7, since i can chmod on ESXi 6.7

my question is "is it possible to disable this kind of feature ?"

i disabled the vmx sandbox, but it still can't chmod

VMware ESXi 6.7 | Ubuntu 18.04 32-bit | Web Server Application becomes Unresponsive

$

My company distributes a local web server that runs on an Ubuntu 18.04 32-bit VM.

One client has this running on VMware ESXi 6.7 and our software goes down periodically (every couple of weeks - hard to tell because it's not used every day).

We have many instances installed on VMware and none of them have this issue.

The VM is still running and shows this output:

First Instance

First_Fail.png

Second Instance

Second_Fail.png

The Client's IT has been able to resolve this by just restarting the VM. But that's not a long-term solution

I don't have direct access to the VM so I can't tinker with it anytime, but I can set up a session with their IT to dig into this.

However I'm not very experienced with Ubuntu or VMware so I'm having trouble making sense of this output or determining whether it's indicative of our main issue.

If anyone could help me shed some light on this or guide my troubleshooting I would be very grateful!

ESXi 6.0 and Emulex LPe11000 (possibly other Emulex cards that aren't working oob)

$

I'm posting this so others might not have to spend hours on the line with support figuring this out.

My environment is older and has the Emulex LPe11000 hba cards.  This card isn't discovered oob.

Obviously a problem right.  After spending hours on the phone with VMWare support they pointed me to Emulex.

The issue really is that some of VMWare's support personnel don't know where they keep all the VIB files for their OS.

I was able to find the attached VIB here.  Import this and apply it and your Emulex card will start working and you can take your hosts up to ESXi 6.

Tuning we have tried, but these make no difference:

esxcfg-advcfg -s 4 /Net/TcpipRxDispatchQueues
esxcfg-advcfg -s 65535 /Net/VmxnetLROMaxLength
esxcli system settings kernel set -s netMaxPktsToProcess -v 128
esxcli system settings kernel set -s intrBalancingEnabled -v false
esxcli network nic ring current set -r 4096 -n vmnic2
esxcli network nic coalesce set -a false -n vmnic2

Any thoughts please, Dell support won't help?

Cannot download Vsphere Hypervisor 6 (free) - download link does not work

This has been happening since at least Saturday, and others have reported this as well (in the regular Hypervisor forums).

https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/evalcenter?p=free-esxi6

Neither the "manually download" nor the "Download Manager" links do anything.

I've tried 6 different computers (Windows XP and Windows 7 Home and Windows 7 Enterprise), 4 different web browsers (IE10, IE11, Firefox, chrome), and 3 different ISP (Verizon FIOS, Road Runner, and whoever supplies our Corporate LAN--AT&T or something).

I'm not sure VMware is even aware that there's an issue.
