Upgrade of ESXi 6.5 - no longer can see internal server RAID drives

$

We have an incident where after upgrading our Supermciro to the latest 6.5 ESXi release where ESXi is not seeing the internal SAS drives.

Internal SAS controller is not seeing the drives.  Prior to the ESXi update, vCenter was showing under Storage Adapters, MegaRAID SAS Invader Controller with Storage Device Local AVAGO disk.

I booted the ESXi server and went into the RAID utility. All of the drives show on-line and active with no failures.

I checked with the vendor and we tried a new backplane riser card.  Did not help.  He said if the drives are seen by the controller, then he thinks the problem is not a hardware issue.

He thinks there is some disconnect in the ESXi somewhere …especially since the only two hardware pieces it could be at this point are backplane and motherboard. However, the internal SATA drives are working fine, so that really rules out the backplane and motherboard.

Has anyone seen anything like this after upgrading ESXi 6.5?

Anyone see something similar?

thanks

First attempt installing 7.0 - Intel 82576 NICs not seen

I appreciate things change with time and vmware decided not to support directly the Intel 82576  NICs any more (a guess of mine)

however I went building a custom .ISO loading the "old" net-ing drivers as this is what my old 6.5 installation did use.

The ISO creation went well with no errors:

Requirements for Maintenance Mode

$

Hi,

I wanted to understand when maintenance mode is required prior to shutdown. I have a simple setup with one host running about a dozen vms. Is it necessary for me to put the server into maintenance mode every time I shut the server down? Or is it really only required with a multi-host setup where you are migrating VMs, etc? I'm having a hard time finding info for a single host.

Thanks!

ATTO ExpressSAS H644 PassThrough Crashing Server with Purple Screen of Death (PSOD)

Hello,

i have freshly installed a ESXi 6.7 (Build 16075168) on a HPE Proliant DL380Gen9 with SPP 2020.03.0, vib-bundle mar2020 and a ATTO ExpressSAS H644 installed.

Connected to the Atto is a Tape Library (one Tapedrive with a robotic-unit) to do additional Backups. The ESXi Server is installed on a 128GB SD-Card.

The Proliant has 2 900GB HDs installed in Raid 10 for VMFS-Storage and there is a VM installed (Win2016 all Patches). So far so good. I have to bring now the ATTO-Card in PassThrough Mode. Thats also working. But when i connect the SAS-Card to the VM (RAM-Reservation is done) and switch on the VM, the VM starts up till 42% and then i have a Purple Screen of Death on the Hypervisor-Server.

I checked the ATTO-Driver on the ESXi, there was no driver. I installed the driver-vib (esas2hba 1.70 SAS Driver for ATTO). But there is still the same Problem with PSOD.

PSOD: LINTI/MMI (motherboard nonmaskable interrupt), undiagnosed.

Someone has a solution?

Thanks

Markus

ESXi 6.0 Mouse Issues

$

I have a few Windows Server 2019 instances running on ESXi 6.0 in my home lab setup and I seem to come across the same issue over and over again. All of the VMs are built exactly the same but only one of them has an issue where the mouse will just stop clicking. It moves around and will highlight things that its hovering over, but it will not click. VMware tools is installed (I've tried a million different versions and updates, with and without the USB and/or the ps2 drivers) but still no luck. The USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers are installed. The only fix seems to be uninstalling and reinstalling VMware tools a bunch of times until it starts working which is really inconvenient. Then when I do get it working, it may work fine for a few weeks or a few days sometimes only a few hours before it stops working again. I have tried using the web console and the vsphere client and they both give me the same problem.

Has anybody had a similar issue or know of a way to resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided

Intel VMD and VROC support on ESXi 7.0

$

Hello,

I know this has been asked before, but there is no definite answer...and both related questions were before release of esxi 7.0.

Reading this https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/memory-and-storage/ssd-software/Intel_VMD_NVMe_VMWare_User_Gui…

as another user has mentioned, it is supposedly supported as long as the drives are Intel, u2 form factor and on a hot plugable back plane...

On the VMware compatibility guide, the intel VMD driver is listed as native in the esxi 7.0

(iavmd version 2.0.0.1055-3vmw)

I am planning on ordering a new server for hosting esxi, and I have to clear this up before choosing my configuration...

(server will be a supermicro, most probably 1029U-TRTP2 with intel's p4610 nvme drives)

It will be a single host, no HA, vSAN or whatever, all VM's on the local datastore which I would like to be on the NVMe drives.

However I don't feel at ease having a single drive...I would prefer having a raid 1 array with 2 of the aforementioned drives.

Regular Backups will be implemented (still haven't decided on which path I will follow for this), but still if the single drive fails, I will have downtime...

Putting the 2 drives behind a raid controller, defies the purpose of going nvme...

Right now I am stuck with an HP DL380 G6 server running esxi 5.5. So unfortunately no way of testing...

So my question is, has anyone been able to implement this successfully?

stay safe...

ESXi 6.5 GPU Passthrough

Hi All,

Just want to clarify one thing with the GPU pass through -

Do you need two distinct graphics outputs i.e. one on the motherboard (for ESXi console) and a GPU (for passthrough)?

Struggling to get a a motherboard with a NO graphics output to passthrough an Nivida GPU, googling *seems* to indicate I need the above, but any clarification would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

I just upgraded my ESXi 6.5u1 to ESXi 6.7u3 and the sensors for my raid card LSI 9261-8i are not all there and they don't have the usual names:

ESXi 6.7u3:

ESXi 6.5u1:

Drivers and provider used in 6.5:

lsiprovider 500.04.V0.66-0002

Drivers and provider tried in 6.7:

scsi-megaraid-sas 6.611.03.00-1OEM.600.0.0.2494585

lsiprovider 500.04.V0.66-0002

lsiprovider 500.04.V0.69-0005

lsiprovider 500.04.V0.72-0003

lsiprovider 500.04.V0.73-0002

I checked the hardware compatibility and the 9261-8i is still compatible with 6.7.

Anyone has any idea?

Is there still a free version of ESXI that is not just a trial for 60 Days?

ESXi 7 - No Video

Just upgraded my lab to vSphere 7 and found there is no display. I cannot access the DCUI at all.

My video cards are Quadro K2000.

The video cards worked perfectly during the install. On reboot, the display is blank. The monitor is in and active and the vSphere install is working (can hit MGMT IP).

Anyone seen anything like this? Have any ideas why the display would blank out?

Downloading update for ESXi

My ESXi 5.5 is registered and licensed as a free, personal use copy.

When I try to download an update -- the vmware web site tells me ...

You either are not entitled or do not have permissions to download this product.

Check with your My VMware Super User, Procurement Contact or Administrator.

Am I not permitted to download updates?  Or is this some kind of error in the vmware web site?

Automatically Suspend Windows VM

$

Hi all

On an ESXi 6.x server, many VMs can be opened by users and forgotten open even after completing their work.  Memory limits end up being reached and I was looking at methods to automatically suspend Windows Server VMs after inactivity.

The attempt I did is to first set the power options within Windows Server to suspend after some minutes of inactivity and then also in Edit Settings of the VM in ESXi, I set Power Management to Suspend the virtual machine as the choice under "How should the virtual machine respond when the guest OS is placed on standby?".  I then did a test but the VM does not suspend in the sense of an ESXi suspend.  Any suggestions?

Many thanks

Sudden VM console keyboard input failure of the 6.7.0 Update 3 hypervisor.

Not sure what went wrong, but all of a sudden, I can't use my keyboard to control any VMs via their web console.

Using the latest chrome normal keys (a-z,0-9) do not generate any response from the vm, whereas up and down keys scroll up and down on the console's history, even if the VM is showing a setup screen which normally would intercept these inputs.

While using non chromium MS edge, keyboard inputs work as they should.

Looking at the developer console (both edge & chrome), I see many errors for "Unknown class found TooManyWrites" that is triggered from main.js

Any idea what could have gone wrong? This setup was working before.

Custom ESXi install with custom default password

$

So I have customer that we are building systems for and we are now working on an "appliance" that has 51 different nodes each using ESXi.

As it is now, we have to install ESXi, login, change the password rules file to accommodate the custom password as it does not adhere to the default password rules (much more complex), then reboot and log back in and change the password. This is a very time consuming process due to boot times and hands on access to the rack. Each rack gets a different password.

  1. Is there a way to automate this process or more likely, is there a way to generate a custom install of ESXi on the fly, using the generated password? (probably not likely)
  2. Instead of creating a custom install with the password, can I create a custom ESXi install that already has the password rules file updated for the complexity of the password required? At least this would save some time.

I would prefer option 1 to remove human error out of the process, but option 2 would work, however it would require extra QA steps to make sure passwords were entered correctly.

Since we are going to be manufacturing several of these "appliances" a week we would prefer not to spend a full day modifying the rules file and entering a password.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the help!
