LSI SAS PCI Pass-through issue

$

Hi,

I've added LSI SAS Megaraid 9286CV RAID card to an ESXI (6.7 with all the updates) and I passed this card through PCI Pass though. So far, so good.

At first I tried to pass this card with it's option ROM, but it seems vSphere EFI's doesn't support this functionality (booting in EFI mode just freezes the VM with the VMware logo),  so I created a RAID on the host and when booting this VM with this PCIe card, I can see and install an OS (I tried Windows server 2019)

The problem - the  VM machine cannot boot fhis RAID. When I go to the EFI BIOS I see the Windows boot manager, but trying to boot from it always fail.

So as last resort, I've installed the OS on a datastore.

My question: is this issue (unable to boot a VM from vsphere with hardware configured RAID) is known?

Thanks

Slow boot times nfs41client

I have three esxi hosts running on some Dell R640s all the same config and all three hang (have not timed it but at least 5-10mins) at the nfs41client page, I've searched and can't find anything that stands out but am unsure why it would take so long.

We only have iSCSI storage no nfs at all.

Hi

Does vmware have a tool to scan the hardware and recommend driver updates or the best drivers or is this a manual process?

Thanks

Seeing latency spikes in excess of 100ms on my 2 samsung 860 evo ssd's. The throughput is fine getting 500Mbps+ on them but the vmkwarning.log has "performance has deteriorrated. I/O latency increasted from average value" warnings. This is a home server thats why I'm using regular samsung ssd's.

Bridged network in ESXi

$

Good evening,

I hope its okay to post this question which might have been posted like 1000 times already. I am new and actually I dont know what to search.

So this is the situation;:

I have a VMWare ESXi instance on a "Kimsufi" server (which is a virtual server with one IP address).

I want to create 2 - 3 virtual machines who should be able to all connect to the internet via this one IP address from the esxi host. In a Workstation I would just select "bridged networking" and it would work out of the box.

However I cant find this function anyware in ESXI. I know I can create stuff like port groups and VLANs however this still doesnt allow me to connect to the internet with the VMs.

Can someone explain me how to create a bridged network so every VM can surf via the "main" internet connection of the esxi host?

THANKS! ):

Rob

Hello,

I am running ESXi 6.7 and I have enabled hugapages support as per Huge Pages

but this still doesn't do anything

cat /proc/meminfo | grep -i huge

AnonHugePages:    329728 kB

ShmemHugePages:        0 kB

HugePages_Total:       4

HugePages_Free:        4

HugePages_Rsvd:        0

HugePages_Surp:        0

Hugepagesize:       2048 kB

This should be to 1G

The other parameters seem to go well:

cat /proc/sys/vm/nr_hugepages

4

Can someone help ? as my container doesn't start because of this ....

What is the affect of changing VIB Acceptance Level on a host?

$

Does VIB acceptance level affect whether or not a VIB can be installed or does it affect whether or not the modules from a VIB can run?

If I have a host with PartnerSupported VIB installed and I change the acceptance level afterward to "VMwareAccepted", will the modules from the PartnerSupported VIB still run or will they be disabled?

How to disable ESXi Passthrough my findings

$

There is no easy way to do it, it seems.

So I wanted to say that I couldn't afford to do an upgrade on my server and my service provider wanted $30 for IPMI access. I have searched countless forums on how in the world to fix this problem. I set Passthrough on and all my datastores vanished and said I need to add a datastore. I couldn't remove Passthrough because since the file system is mounted in read only for some reason you can't ssh in to the server and edit esxi.conf to fix the problem. This is my first tutorial on how to do this, so don't bash my head that it's sloppy.

1. Boot with a debian or ubuntu live cd

List your drives / partitioned: Open a terminal window

2. type parted -l

Mine was sda5

3. mount /dev/sda5 /mnt

4. ls /mnt/

5. cp /mnt/state.tgz ~/

6. cd ~

7. tar xvf state.tgz

8. tar xvf local.tgz

So you get a etc folder now. Go to /etc/vmware

9. nano esxi.conf

10. Replace everything that says passthru with vmkernel

11. Save the file

Now lets copy the file back to the mount point, but first we have to recreate the archive.

12. tar czf local.tgz etc/

13. tar czf state.tgz local.tgz

14. cp state.tgz /mnt/

Done. Reboot and everything should work as it did originally.

This was tested in ESXi 6.0 and 5.5.

Hope this will help others that are trapped in a similar situation. Of course you can reinstall but a lot of people wanted to know how to do it. This which is basically 14 steps can probably be shortened. I hope that my first contribution on this forum is not overlooked.

how to exit 'watch' command?

I ran the command watch ntpq -p localhost in the ESXi 5.1 direct console user interface and now I can't figure out how to make it stop and exit.

Ctrl+C and every imaginable such key sequence does nothing. So, that's it. I just want to exit the command.

[ERROR] "EsxiTaskBase::setError " ( "96 " ) ** "Fault code 99: Connection timed out"

I am looking for what can cause this error message.

Getting this repeatedly when trying to connect to the ESXi Host.

Environment:

  • Hypervisor:VMware ESXi, 6.7.0, 9484548
  • Model:PowerEdge R640
  • Processor Type:Intel(R) Xeon(R) Gold 6134 CPU @ 3.20GHz
  • Logical Processors:32
  • NICs:9
  • Virtual Machines:104

25% of the VM's are logging back into the server as an administrator.

Then create a list of the VM's available and monitoring them.

Again, Need to know how to allow more connections or increase the necessary timeout.

I just got a brand new Intel NUC10i7FNH.

When installing the ESXi in,Prompt "no network adapters" after completing hardware scan.

It's the same model on my nuc8,and it works normally.

Has any one ever installed esxi on nuc10?

Hi experts,

I am getting strange behavior for ESXI6.5 (installed as test at my home clone server). Like i have installed 2 SSD, one is Intel M.2 and another is transcend SATA III SSD. from both SSD i have created datastore. But i am getting different speed on the 2 SSD like on intel i am getting full speed but on transcend i am getting only 16mbps speed. tried to search google, but didnt got any solution. my ESXI is installed on intel M.2 SSD.

esxi_ssd.jpg

Pls find the speed diff (2.02 vs 22.77 MB/s) t10.ATA is transcend and NVMe is Intel M.2

Pls suggest what to do.

ESXi 6.7 update 3 Threadripper 3990x - install error - Failed to initialize acpi subsystem

Hey Everyone -

Need to run cluster software which I had working just fine in a lab. However, had to buy a much larger system due to resource constraints. That being said, I purchased the 64 core AMD Threadripper 3990x with an Asus mobo.

When it boots off USB it goes through the initialization process dying with the following. Also, mistakenly transferred a disk with ESXi 6.7 previously installed with the same error when it boots. Not sure what else to do as I've tried various options to no avail. Hopefully someone can guide me through this problem.

[HELP] Missing VMs folders from datastore

$

Hi

I think I had power down when I was at work, and after rebooting ESXI 5.5 all my VMs were UNKNOWN (INACCESSIBLE). Tried to restore them to find out that all folders with VMs are gone from Datastore, with all virtual disks, config files, etc.

There are two folders instead:

.sdd.sf

and

vsantraces (which I think was created on the day of power loss)

Could somebody advise me how to get them back?

Network adapter not recognized

$

I am running ESXI 6.7 on SuperMicro server SSG-2029P-E1CR24H  it has the motherboard model X11DPH-T and I have a 10Gb network adapter with two ports. SuperMicro assures me that this board has the following network adapter in it. Intel X722 / X557. There is also an onboard single 1Gb network port that I assume is the "default" port.

ESXI does not recognize this third port. It is turned on in the BIOS and when I plug it in to the network it shows drive activity.

When I check in the ESXI CLI, the two ports are identified as X722 ports

cli.png

When I check in the "Configure Management Network" in the base ESXI interface they show as Intel X557.

dual port nic port2.pngdual port nic port1.png

However, only 2 ports ever show up. There is a third port that I would like to use for management, reserving the 2 10Gb ports for LACP or Trunking to the network.

Here is an image of the inside showing all three of the internal network ports.

ports.jpg

Any ideas on what is happening here? Why isn't that port recognized by ESXI and why are the other 2 being identified as two different models of intel switch when viewed through two different interfaces of the same ESXI installation?

Thanks,

James
