VM's lose network connectivity randomly

$

0

We have been experiencing some VM's losing network connectivity sporadically. The VM's stay online for a while then suddenly it acts like it is no longer on the network. Everything appears to be correct. The vNICs are connected and you can get to the console. I can't ping it from outside the host and the VM can't ping it's Def Gateway.

Hardware is 4 HP Gen 8 LFF with Quad port NIC's HP NC364T running ESXi 5 U1 with vCenter Server clustered.

Anyone experience this?

If I vmotion it to another host it comes back online. That's been our temporary solution.

Thanks

ESXi 6.7u3 PSoD Reoccurrences (Exception 13) - what could be the root cause

$

I have been runnng ESXi on a machine for about a year now, recently over the past few months, I have been experiencing more and more PSoD.

Without the slightest clue as to specifically what is the cause, I did grab the coredumps according to the support website, however, for a home user, to spend $300 on a support contract is a stiff price, System wise, nothing has changed on the system.

System Spec Wise:

1TB Samsung NVME Datastore

120 GB Intel SSD ESXi installation

AMD Ryzen 7 1700 Eight-Core Processor

64 GB ECC Samsung Memory

LSI 2008 HBA (pass through to guest)

6x 6TB Western Digital HDDs (pass through to guest)

GT710 GPU

X470 Master SLI/ac Motherboard

As the file is too large to attach here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1mkEnaov-kT1PFJojx5U1-HftmJWweCvthttps://drive.google.com/open?id=1mkEnaov-kT1PFJojx5U1-HftmJWweCvt

Above are the two latest dumps that have occurred on the system.

Is there some specific troubleshooting I can do to narrow down the steps related to  these dumps, as according to the support page (VMware Knowledge Base ) there is not any troubeshooting steps besides reaching out to VMeware Suport and shelling out $300?

Atom C3758/X553 GbE driver for ESXi 6.5/6.7

A few days ago, I bought Atom C3758 based Mother Board.

Unfortunately, ESXi 6.5/6.7 have no inbox driver for X553 GbE.

So I build x553 only driver from ixgbe-5.3.6 linux driver.

I'm using it with following parts.

Asrock Rack C3758D4I-4L

Kingston KVR24R17D4K4/128

Intel ET Dual Port Server Adapter

(initial connection by igb inbox driver)

Transcend JetFlash 720S

SilverStone SST-CS280 / SST-ST45SF

I have tested with IPv4, MTU9000, no VLAN only. (mainly iSCSI connections)

Other setting may cause problems.

However, if you are interested in the driver, try it.

To use this driver:

# esxcli software acceptance set --level=CommunitySupported

# esxcli software vib install -v /tmp/net65-x553-5.3.6.x86_64.vib

numa.autosize.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode lack of info

$

I have a VM with 64 vCPUs and 512GB RAM, it’s a massive db. ESXi 6.5 are HP DL560 with 4 sockets (22 cores each + HT) and 1.5 TB RAM. According to Frank Denneman's book vSphere 6.5 Host Resources Deep Dive I aimed at keeping the VPD onto as little psockets as possible. By disabling the Hot add CPU feature and by adding the preferHT set to True I increased performance quite a lot and I expected to see cores spread onto two physical sockets. However while the VMWare KB 2003582 states how to implement the preferHT setting it does not mention something Frank Denneman did say in his book:

Quote:

“Please remember to adjust the numa.autosize.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode setting in the VM if it is already been powered-on once. This setting overrides the numa.vcpu.preferHT=TRUE setting”

End quote

I read the above after I did the initial changes to the VM and I have now noticed that its numa.autosize.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode value is 11. According to Virtual NUMA Controls I should get 6 virtual nodes by dividing 64 by 11,but I see the VM has 7. This is another thing I don't understand.

following which criteria do I adjust numa.autosize.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode value?

Shall I set it to 44 as it is the max number of logical cores in a physical socket? Or shall I disable it and let the system do its best decision? If yes how do I disable it? This is the current layout of the cpu resources of the vm:

although performances have improved I’m not happy with the distribution of the cores. Specially considering that homeNode 3 is not used at all.

So, to recap my question to the experienced admins are the following:

1. following which criteria do I adjust the numa.autosize.vcpu.maxPerVirtualNode value so that the preferHT setting is enforced correctly?

2. why homeNode 3 is not in use at all?

3. I knew that in 6.5 the coresPerSocket setting was decoupled from the Socket setting, so it does not really matter anymore if you set 12 sockets x 1 core or 1 Socket x 12 cores (unless licenses rectrictions are in place). However in Frank Denneman's book I read:

quote

"If preferHT is used, we recommend aligning the cores per socket to the physical CPU package layout. This leverages the OS and application LLC optimizations the most "

end quote

So, in this case the use of CoresPerSocket is effective? Then I should set 2 Sockets x 32 coresPerSocket? Option that frankly I haven't seen available in the VM Settings window

4. Why the VM has 7 virtual nodes instead of 6?

vsphere 6.7 LSI raid card, can't get drive status

Hi!

I have this server setup at home:

SuperMicro X10SLL-F

Intel Xeon E3-1241 v3

32GB 3CC 1600

LSI 8708EM2

2x Velociraptor 10k 300gb RAID 1

4x WD Red 2TB Raid 5

I was running Vsphere 6.0 since a long time, and I decided to go over 6.7. Installation worked fine, I have access to everything, all is working... Except 2 things:

1. I can't get my LSI 8708EM2 (detected as a 1078) to show drive status

2. Can't get my Storage Manager to access disk info or rebuild raid.

When I was on vSphere 6.0, I was able to see my drive status (and veeam one could alert me), and with my WIndows VM, I had LSI MSM and I was able to configure the raid card.

So what I did:

Install SAS driver I was using in version 6 --> not working

Installed the SMIS I had  --> not working

Installed lastest SMIS  --> not working

Disabled the Firewall --> not working

I have no idea what else I can do. I know it's an old card, but I got it for cheap. Any idea how can I get this fixed?

Thanks

Greetings,

I hit a PSOD on my homelab (non enterprise/home desktop components), and was hoping someone could clarify if this is hardware/software related. I didn't have much success finding information related to "Tcpip4 wtask", so any additional information would be great.

Can't install ESXi on SLC Flash USB

I've been battling with installing ESXi 6.7 U3 Dell R730xd image for a few hours now on a server I'm building for a customer. I've used Gparted to recreate the partition table and tried other Chipfancier SLC USB drives (I have a few). I have no problem installing on a regular Sandisk Cruzer 16GB. Attached is a screenshot of the error message I'm getting currently. Apparently I can't write to the disk. Can anyone shed some light on what's going on?

Our Dell PE R730 Esxi hosts 6.7U3 is crashing with PSOD. We are using Qlogic 57810 10 GbE nic cards. It can not be a hardware issue since it is happening on three servers after the upgrade. Anyone had an issue?

We did use Dell Vmware.iso for upgrades.

No Datastore found after power outage and new ESXi installation

Hello,

We had a big power outage and were not able to shutdown the server in time. If that was not enough, the USB key used to boot ESXi seems to have died since the last boot and is unreadable so I had to rebuild a new ESXi 6.0 on a new key.

Dell PowerEdge T430

ESXi 6.0.0 Update 3 (Build 13635687) (Latest from Dell.)

Small place, no vCenter, no other servers connecting to those datastores.

Both local datastores on a raid and icsci datastores for backups have the same problem.

The devices are found, (normal, degraded) I can see the vmfs partitions on them but no datastore or vm are found. I also get an unhandled exception in the ESXi web client when trying to browse datastore, adding a new vm does not open any new window or anything.

I tried a couple console commands (voma, esxcli storage, vmfkstools, etc...) found here or in the vmware support website when searching for datastore problems but none worked so far. (Sorry, I've been at this for hours and I'm a bit tired and don't remember all I tried.)

Rebuilding all the vms would not be a problem if at least I could access the datastores for the bare metal backups of AD and Exchange.

I'm going to sleep now but I'll be able to provide logs or more info in a couple hours.

Thank you!

NUMA node count not right

Hello again, I hope to get a reply on this one.. I have a vCluster with 8 nodes ESXi 6.5, all HP DL560 G10 with 4 sockets. All with HT enabled. However 7 show the following numa nodes count:

[root@esx000009:~] esxcli hardware memory get | grep NUMA

   NUMA Node Count: 8

and one only shows the following:

[root@esx000008:~] esxcli hardware memory get | grep NUMA

   NUMA Node Count: 4

why would that be?? They are all alike... I can't think of anything that clarifies this ackward host

Dear Pro,

we have blade server with 8 nodes and running VMware 6.0 so i have below doubts please advise.

1) Since my current ESXi verion is  "ESXi600-201703003" SO i can directly update the VMware  ESXi 6.0P08-ESXi600-201909001version right?

2) Also how to compare  current Hardware Version NIC/HBA from Vmware site in order to execute drivers in VMWare.

3) if i update HPE server  drivers from SPP directly so i need to update HBA/NIC drivers version from ESXI also?

4) About HBA and NIC drivers how to update as from Putty CLI.

Please advise, your prompt reply will be highly appreciated

I cannot connect to the ESXi server from within Fusion 11.5. I  can connect via ssh no problem  but when I put the server IP, username, and password into the “connect to server” fields in Fusion, I instantly get a “connection timed out” pop up.

Is there something I need to enable in ESXi or is there something else  I’m missing?

sorry if this is a noob question. I’m learning lots but this one has me stumped as I looked for hours.

Thanks for  your help in advance.

vSphere 6.5 U1 - Driver for Dell PERC H710 Mini

I just upgraded my Dell PowerEdge R320 to 6.5 U1.  When I go into the Host - Monitor - Hardware - Storage, I get the message "The Small Footprint CIM Broker Daemon (SFCBD) is running, but no data has been reported. You may need to install a CIM provider for your storage adapter.".

The Dell PERC H710 mini appears to be compatible: VMware Compatibility Guide - I/O Device Searchhttps://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=io&productid=39513

I found an older post about needing the CIM driver because Dell doesn't provide one: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/b/techcenter/archive/2013/07/01/monitoring-dell-poweredge-raid-controllers-in-vm…

Any help/advice on how I can get my storage data?  I'm just connecting to the web GUI for the host, I don't have vCenter setup yet.

RDM - VMWare - Failover Cluster - Server 2016 - Disk increase / extend / expand

Hi all

I have a 2-node cluster that comprises of;

  • 2 x Windows 2016 servers on VMWare 6.5 connected to HP SAN.

These nodes have an RDM attached.  This RDM is in physical mode.

When extending the RDM on the SAN (which was done whilst the VMs were running) I noticed the following:

  • The guest OS immediately sasw the increased size.
  • The VM - Edit Settings - shows the original size and not the increased size.

Even after issuing command:

vim-cmd vmsvc/reload 'vm-id'

the size seen by the VM in VMware did not change. The ESX host does see the increased size however.

  1. Is this something i can safely ignore?
  2. Have I missed a step?

I reviewed this article below also which doesn't mention anything

Hi all,

we have some problems with SNA traffic in a new ESXi 6.5 u1 after migrate VM from vSphere 5.5 infrastructure. We have an application that is having SNA connectivity issue when try to connect vía SNA. We move the server back to ESXi 5.5 and the application is stable again.

Does anybody have this issue and if there is any solution.

I've been running ESXi 5 on an old Dell server for several years, and installed one Centos 7 VM.

After a recent power cut, the VM didn't restart, and I couldn't log in remotely to the host to restart it. I rebooted the host machine by switching if off and on again.

I then tried to log in to the Management Console using a browser, and succeeded just once, from my phone, giving me the opportunity to restart the Centos virtual machine. So it's working, as designed, as a Plex Media Server.

But before and since the one connection from my phone, I can't login from any browser, or indeed from my phone again, to the management console of the host.

I just get the error message in the title.

I've tried both Chrome Version 78.0.3904.87 (Official Build) (64-bit) (but it is updating as I write this) and Safari 13.0.3 (14608.3.10.10.1), both running on Mac Mojave.

And now when I try again in Safari, using the same credentials that worked on the phone, it just won't connect, saying I have the wrong password.

Do I have to connect a keyboard and screen to the ESXi host to re-establish a connection and/or update ESXi? The Dell is old enough that it won't work on ESXi 6 or later. AFAIK.

If/when I do get a connection, I would like to set the VM also to restart in the face of a power failure, but a) I can't access it, and b) the instructions I found to set the properties of the VM to auto-restart don't match what I saw on the screen the one time I did have the connection to it
