Old Applications on Vm are very slow

$

hello

My enterprise use some old application based on Clipper in citrix Xenapp Environment . Citrix Servers Is implemented on multiple Physical PC and every thing is OK .

I want to move citrix Environment along with all application to Vm based on ESXi 6.0. For this purpose I created VM's and  did clean install windows server 2003 along with all application on them . every application such as : Excel , word and etc is OK . Since I use the virtual machine, users of the organization complain about the speed of the Clipper program during reporting. But when they do this on a physical computer, they have a great speed. Clipper is an old application based on Dos . When that happens Disk,Cpu and ram usage on Vm and Esx host is OK and no problem.

I did a lot of searches on the Internet, and I realized that if hyper-threading is enabled on a computer, some old programs may not be compatible with it and they can not work properly with it.

What solutions are available to fix this problem and disable hyper-threading on just one vm?

Can only enable Hyper-Threading on ESX Host or other ways to disable it on a Vm?

Windows Server 2008 r2 in place upgrade to server 2012 r2

Hello Gurus - I have a test environment vmware host that i have a few windows server 2008 R2 on. I did a in place upgrade on one from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 Datacenter that worked fine. Now i have a microsoft web server 2008 r2 that I am doing the same thing as well. This time i go thru the upgrade steps then it reboots to the 2012 Windows icon with the dots spinning below it. It does that for about a minute or two then I get the "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you." message. Then it reboots to the same screen and does the same thing again. I looked online but there is so many different answers to this and i hate to have to rebuild a 2012 web server and migrate everything over. I have reverted the upgrade back to a vm snapshot i took before the upgrade. My vmware tools is up to date and i have checked on the microsoft technet but it seems to that it could be on the vm side. Im not sure because i was able to do a in place upgrade on one machine fine until i got to this one. Any help or direction i should take on this? Thanks!!

HP FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 650FLB - Gen9 networking inconsistency

I have come across an interesting issue with a new HPE platform. The system is running within a C7000 BladeSystem, with BL460c Gen9 blades.

We have noticed some degradation in performance on iSCSI connection (using the Software iSCSI initiator), this traffic runs over vmnic1 and vmnic2 details from the NIC list are below.

vmnic1  0000:06:00.1  elxnet  Up        Up       10000  Full32:a6:05:e0:00:be  1500  Emulex Corporation HPE FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 650FLB Adapter
vmnic2  0000:06:00.2  elxnet  Up        Up       10000  Full32:a6:05:e0:00:bd  1500  Emulex Corporation HPE FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 650FLB Adapter

Each NIC is reporting at 10000 Mb full, however I am not able to set the speed on the ESXi server. vmnic1 reports the following for advertised link modes;

[root@ESX:~] esxcli network nic get -n vmnic1

   Advertised Auto Negotiation: true

   Advertised Link Modes: 1000BaseKR2/Full, 10000BaseKR2/Full, 20000BaseKR2/Full, Auto

   Auto Negotiation: true

Where as vmnic2 reports the following modes

[root@ESXi2b-14:~] esxcli network nic get -n vmnic2

   Advertised Auto Negotiation: false

   Advertised Link Modes: 20000None/Full

   Auto Negotiation: false

Confused, the settings are identical for these within OneView. Both NIC's are using firmware - 12.0.1110.11 from SPP 2018.06.0. The HPE ESXi image has been used including driver version 12.0.1115.0 which shows as being compatible on the comparability guide VMware Compatibility Guide - I/O Device Search.

Has anyone else seen this issue? If I try and manually set the speed/duplex settings via esxcli it fails with the following error in the vmkernel.log

2018-08-14T23:49:41.361Z cpu20:65677)WARNING: elxnet: elxnet_linkStatusSet:7471: [vmnic2] Device is not privileged to do speed changes

As a result of this when using HCIBench to test the storage throughput the 95%tile_LAT value is reading excessively when traversing vmnic2 - 95%tile_LAT = 3111.7403 ms

Any thoughts??

VMware tools not installed on win server 2k3

Hi, dears,

I have converted a legacy physical server which is operating on the Windows 2003 server using Vcenter converter utility to VMware ESXi 6.7 host,

everything was great except Graphics, network and some other drivers not recognized by windows,

I tried to run "install VMware tools" many times without any luck, even I tried to reboot the server as well. nothing...

I read in another article to uninstall VMware tools then re-install it again but the problem I couldn't find it on ad-remove applications,

please advise

vmware ESXi upgrade does not see previous version

Upgrading from ESXi 5.5 to 6.5 using  iso at the console. We have successfully upgraded 2 other host however on one host the upgrade is not finding the previous install of 5.5 so we are only getting the following two options (no upgrade option)

- Install ESXi, Preserve VMFS Datastore

- Install ESXi, Overwrite VMFS Datastore

We have rebooted the host and verified ESXi 5.5 is running and functional.

Any suggestions?

ESXi 6.5 no network connection

I have been running the 'free' version of ESXi 6.5 for around a year with no problems. Over the weekend the server lost connectivity to the network. I did see that the license was expiring a few weeks ago, but of course did nothing . When I use the DCUI at the server the management server settings are correct for the network. When I test the setting all the pings come back failed.

When I enter the command line interface and ping 127.0.0.1 OK, 192.168.0.250 (management network) OK. 192.168.0.1 DGW, host unreachable. I have used esxcli network namespace to check the nic and it shows the nic is up and the link is up. I tried taking the nic down and back up, no love. The server is a Lenovo Think Server T130 with a xeon processor

So, could an expired license cause this?

Can I apply a new license from the cli?

Should I just reinstall 6.5 with a new license and move on?

Thanks,

Don

Hi community,

I just received 16 BL360c Gen8 HPE blades. they all have 64gb sandisk USB thumb drives installed with ESXi 6.7 U1 but I cant seem to get the servers to boot to the USB even when it shows the options 1) 2) 3) 4) etc 3) is to boot to USB but it just seems to always boot to the network. I changed the iLO4 boot options to the USB drive but it doesn't seem to boot to the USB it still does the network boot.

is there a setting somewhere to change in the bios I remember I had a similar issue with the DL360 Gen7 servers but cant remember how I did it. as these are newer.

something to note my vcenter has currently 20 hosts connected but they ant all online i have 3 online atm.

both the new ESXi host and vcenter are 6.7 u1 or u1b for vcenter.

Question about reverting to a snapshot

$

I was doing an upgrade on one of my VMs the other night.  Prior to doing so I took a snapshot.  The upgrade went a bit sideways, so on the VM in my vCenter client, I clicked on "Revert to current snapshot" and when all was said an done I was back to where I was prior to the upgrade.  All was good again.

Currently, however, I still have a snapshot in "Snapshot Manager" that I want to get rid of.  What will happen if I click to Delete the snapshot with the VM in its current state (basically prior to the snapshot, but as the VM is an Exchange server, there have been changes to system in terms of e-mails coming in, getting deleted, moved to folders, etc.)  Can I Delete the current snapshot but not merge any of the changes from the botched update attempt?

Thanks! :-)

"DHCP Lookup Failed"

ESXi Version 6.5.0 Build 4887370

Dell PowerEdge R710
2x Intel Xeon CPU x5660 @ 2.80 GHz
128 GB Memory

The Problem:
1. This server had been running normally until a recent power outtage

2. Instead of listing a home address of 192.168.xxx.xx, it is defaulting to 169.254.141.138 (Waiting for DHCP...)
3. Gives the following message: "Warning: DHCP Lookup failed. You may be unable to access this system until you customize its network configuration"

Attempted Solutions
4. Restart ESXi - restart completes, still shows as in #2 above, still gives error as in #3 above
5. Restart Management Network - reports success; returning to the main screen gets home address of 0.0.0.0 while it (presumably) is attempting to reach DHCP for assignment. Returns error in #3 above after waiting 90 seconds or so.

Additional Information

6. There is not an IT department or network department to consult - we're a small (read as ~8 people) firm
7. I am an admitted neophyte in regards to this, so kindly bear with my ignorance - I don't know what I don't know, so I'm hoping someone has the patience and knowledge to assist here
8. Tried "Test Management Network" option...ESXi attempts ping 208.67.222.xxx and 208.67.220.xxx and fails at both
9/ I've attempted to do my due diligence and scoured the web for similar cases - and I see similar issues, but never a solution. I've checked through the forums, as well as for any documentation or tutorials but have not found anything, yet.

Thanks in advance for anyone willing to lend time and assistance. They are very much appreciated!

Hi,

in the hpe blade enclosure I believe on the backplane two blades are always joined together in the back so you don't need cables on the outside to join them but im guessing if you have two blades in slots 1 & 2 that are joined in the back you can use a two host vSAN and use the 10GBe cards in the two blades to join them together in vCenter? if that makes sense, so you can have a all-flash vSAN.

vGPU or Workaround with a Quadro P2000 or Grid K1/K2?

$

So my plan was to purchase either a Quadro P2000 or Grid K1/K2 gpu to allow a single physical gpu to pass through graphics acceleration to multiple VMs. I intend to setup different OS environments on the eSXI hypervisor such as Linux, Windows, EVE-NG for study/career growth.

However, I noticed that their are some hurdles such as licensing being the big one.

So my question is, is their anyway I can use either of those two cards to allow for multiple VM's to use it at the same time while maintaining gpu acceleration without paying any monthly licensing cost?

I think my work or school can offer me eSXI and maybe vSphere Enterprise for free, but I do not want to pay any type of licensing for myself. This includes paying Nvdia outrageous fees to open up their vGPU.

I am unsure of AMD for this type of stuff either.

I ordered a P2000 but I think I should cancel before I set myself up for a big headache.

promiscous port group and vlan tagging

I created a dvs and enable promiscous mode on it. do I need to take the PG in order for the vswitch or nic to see all traffic?

I am runing UCS and have a native vlan set on it. do I need to change that?

my security group is saying the vlan tag needs to be at 4095 but I cannot even create this vlan id in ucs

Windows LSI_SAS Driver, Storport hotfix and performance

$

While investigating a Windows 2008 R2 VM disk performance problem, I recently came across the following article about an updated Storport driver for Windows 2008 R2 that indicates it could significantly affect storage performance (see below). It looks really interesting but I have a couple of questions (1) Does the LSI_SAS driver use Storport? and (2) has anyone tried this update?

Computer intermittently performs poorly or stops responding when the Storport driver is used in Windows Server 2008 R2

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2468345

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install some high-performance storage devices on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2. For example, you install a host-based RAID adapter or a Fibre Channel adapter that can access more than 4 gigabytes (GB) on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • The Storport.sys driver is used to manage these storage devices.
  • The computer has more than 4 GB of physical memory.
  • You install an application or service that uses a large amount of memory on the computer.

For example, you install SQL Server or Exchange Server on the computer.

In this scenario, the computer may intermittently perform poorly or stop responding for a while.

For example, the computer stops responding for 10-20 seconds.

Details from VM problem:

> Several of these events: 129 LSI_SAS N/A N/A Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort3, was issued.

> Server had to be rebooted to clear the problem

Network Adapters and VLAN (optional) greyed out in DCUI

I am studying for my VCP exam and I am using a nested setup in Workstation. Suddenly I don't have access to the network adapters in the DCUI. I have migrated both NICs used for management to a vmkernel management port group in a distributed switch.

Does someone know what is going on here? Google gave me this hint Configure Management Network Greyed out in DCUI

But in my case the hosts are still connected to vCenter and are working fine no issues anywhere.

vSphere web client slow/unresponsive

$

Hello all,

First time posting here, so please go easy. I've included a diagram with the basic setup.

I can provide additional gory details of the networking done with Virtual Switches and Port Groups if that would be helpful, but at this point I believe the networking to be working well (see below).

I have set up ESXi 6.7U1 (patched with 201901 patch) with 3 virtual machines (two routers and one firewall). From the Laptop for Remote Management, I am unable to establish a connection to the vSphere web client to be able to manage the ESXi instance.

  • My networking is correct, to say that my inside router behind the firewall has its default route all the way back to my local network.
  • The firewall is allowing all traffic in/out during setup and testing phase. Rules to be added later.
  • I am able to ping and ssh to the ESXi host from the Laptop for Remote Management
  • I am able to pass traffic to/from the local laptop all the way to the internet at speeds up to 50 Mbit/sec (bandwidth isn't an issue)

The local laptop (on the inside Fixed Site LAN) is there to test. This laptop is able to login reliably to the vSphere web client.

The Laptop for Remote Management is NOT able to login to the vSphere web client. Yes, I can do a remote desktop to the local laptop and login this way, but in production this local laptop will not be available.

Why am I not able to login and manage the ESXi host with vSphere web client from the Laptop for Remote Management?
