VM's lose network connectivity randomly

$

We have been experiencing some VM's losing network connectivity sporadically. The VM's stay online for a while then suddenly it acts like it is no longer on the network. Everything appears to be correct. The vNICs are connected and you can get to the console. I can't ping it from outside the host and the VM can't ping it's Def Gateway.

Hardware is 4 HP Gen 8 LFF with Quad port NIC's HP NC364T running ESXi 5 U1 with vCenter Server clustered.

Anyone experience this?

If I vmotion it to another host it comes back online. That's been our temporary solution.

Thanks

vSphere Replication Plugin 8.1.1

Hi all,

I am planning to upgrade from VR 6.1.2.1 and eventually then upgrade SRM 6.1.2.1 to 8.1.1.

Reading the below extract from VMWare docs, can anybody explain to me how this would work? Any links or pics to what the plugin would look like?

https://docs.vmware.com/en/vSphere-Replication/8.1/com.vmware.vsphere.replication-admin.doc/GUID-DEFB63AE-C60C-4606-9F1C-E1B270CA408A.html"Once vSphere Replication has been upgraded to version 8.1.1, you can no longer use the old vSphere Replication plug-in to manage the updated vSphere Replication sites. You must use the new standalone vSphere Replication user interface and plug-in instead."

But I also read that the new vSphere Replication plugin will be migrated into the Site Recovery plugin, so which is it? This is the bit I do not understand since my SRM would still be on 6.1.2.1.

one server hangs at 95%

Apparently someone improperly unplugged our esxi shutdown the server by pulling the power cord.

When I came in this morning I could only get three of the six server to come up.

I then rebooted the esxi server and they all come up except one.  I have tried two more times of

rebooting the server but no change.

I am running esix5. There are 4 SUSE11 servers and two Windows 2008 servers

When powering on through VSphere Client all machines power up except one.

It is a Suse11 server and it hangs at 95%.  I have been frantically searching on the internet how to fix this but can find nothing helpful.

Can someone please help.  This is where our faculty files are stored.

ESXi 6.7 new install failing on new server

I have a brand new HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 server.  I am getting an error when trying to install ESXi (have tried both 6.5 and 6.7) on this bare metal new server.  The first method I tried was mounting the ISO via HPE's intelligent provisioning through the iLO, second method I tried was making a bootable USB with the ISO.  Both failed on the initial install, before it even gets to the pop up welcome screen, during the grey and yellow boot screen, runs through the services, then stops on "Reading Installation scripts" I get this error and the server reboots:

"Error (see log for more info):

An error has occurred while parsing the installation script

error:file:///ks.cfg:line 3: bootproto --device= specified, but "undefined" was not found on the system."

Any help or insight would be extremely helpful.  Server specs and error screenshot attached.

HomeLab with Vmware ESXI and GPU passtrough

Hi there,
This is my first trip to this forum, and i am quite new to vmware ESXI.
What i am trying to do is creating a lab computer with one guestOS with GPU passthrough, but i have some issues and was hoping for some help.

My build is as following

CPU: Intel® Core™ i7-6700K Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.20 GHz) Product Specifications

Motherboard: Asus Z170-A https://www.asus.com/no/Motherboards/Z170-A/

GPU: GeForce GTX1060 (MSI) GeForce GTX 1060 GAMING X 6G | Graphics card - The world leader in display performance | MSI Global

After what i have been able to dig up this setup should be compatible with IOMMU and VT-X/VT-D. I have read that passing trough a consumer
card like the 1060 can be difficult duo to Nvidia blocking this for their consumer cards, but also that it should be possible tricking by editing the conf with hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE".

After trying a failing a lot i have managed to get the gpu visible in the guestOS, but i only get error (43). I have tried upgrading the BIOS, the guest OS and installing the latest driver. I also tried with both the ESXI version 5.5 and 5.7. The last test i was not able to enable "IOMMU" on the CPU however, and got an error saying there was something wrong or the hardware was not supported.

Anyone got any suggestions, or is this not possible for this setup?

Can you change NMP and PSP from most recently used to round robin whilst the esxi server is still running

Excuse the question if this sounds really thick but i am new to the Multipath Module and Path Selection Policy, currently all my environment is set to MRU and i need to change it to RR, I also need to set IOPS to equal 1. I know i can change all this via powercli but i am not sure if this can be done while the ESXi host is running or does it need a reboot for the changes to take effect, I am planning to reboot all my hosts when i upgrade them later this year where i will change the default PSP to RR which i know needs a reboot. any comments welcome

Fail to upgrade from 6.5 to 6.7 - PACKAGE_COMPLIANCE

Hi all,

Kind of lost here.

I'm trying to upgrade a Lenovo hosts (System x3550 M5) to 6.7.

We have two identical units.

First attempt failed on VIB merge:

ValueError: Cannot merge VIBs ELX_bootbank_elx-esx-libelxima.so_12.0.1108.0-03, ELX_bootbank_elx-esx-libelxima.so_12.0.1108.0-03 with unequal payloads attributes: ([elx-esx-libelxi: 1493.833 KB], [elx-esx-libelxi: 1602.936 KB])

We solved it on the first host, by deleting the problematic VIB and and then proceeded with the update and it worked like a charm.

We try to do the same on the second host, but the update failed.

Below is a snippet from the VUA log which i think is relevant.

Notice that the <expected> </expected> section is empty.Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Revive system after datastore full

$

Hi

On a new server running ESXI 6.7 free, I configured the database disk to use the entire datastore (275GB), without knowning that snapshots need to go to the same disk.

So after creating two snapshots, the disk filled up (zero bytes left) and the virtual machine failed to start any more.

I attempted to delete the snapshots, but after 12 hours it was at 40% and I cancelled the deletion.

Afterwards the web interface was not showing any snapshopts, but the vmdk files were still there, and I got a notification that I should consolidate the disks of the VM.

I started this, and the web interface became unresponsive.

So I rebooted the system, deleted the disk from the VM and deleted the contents of the datastore manually. It still reported zero bytes available, so I restarted the system.

Now the VM autostarted, without the database disk, and I shut it down.

I got the datastore with the expected amount of empty space, but still got the notification to consolidate the disks.

The other disks of the VM are on different datastores - the system disk on SSD (50GB), and the data disk on a slower HDD (1.5TB on raid 1 of 4TB at 7200RPM), and I would like not to have to reinstall the system.

I started disk consolidation, but the web interface became again unresponsive.

Now, an hour later, the web interface became responsive again, the virtual machine is not showing up in the list of virtual machines, and the consolidate VMDisk task reports being at 1%.

How long is disk consolidation supposed to take? Creating the snapshots only took 2 minutes.

Multiple VMtools show as current on ESX 6.5

Hi,

How could it be possible that multiple versions of VMtools show as current on the same host?  I have configured and double checked my settings to confirm that the ProductLocker on all of my hosts point to the same folder on my SAN.  I don't know how to troubleshoot this.

ESX01

     VM01 10304(Current)

     VM02  10341(Current)

How is this possible?  Shouldn't the VM at 10304 show as upgradeable?

I have several hosts with this issue.

Thanks,

Scott.....

Can you recover an accidentally deleted VMDK file?

$

I was donated a Dell T420 server which I turned into a web server. I've installed ESXi 6 into which I created a Linux Mint LAMP server for hosting a few non profits and a few small business owners I know for free. This is a hobby level thing - not for money. I am very new to all of this.

There is a pair of 500GB SAS drives in this. One is Datastore 1 and the other Datastore 2. The web server is installed in Datastore 1.

At one point the web server crashed and it appeared I have run out of disk space so it wouldn't reboot. After reading a lot online it was suggested to see if removing one or more snapshots might not free up the space. I only had two snapshots in place. I deleted the oldest one. However, this did not appear to free up enough space. I did not want to delete my only remaining snapshot.

It was then suggested that during the process the associated VMDK files in the datastore may not have been cleaned out properly during the snapshot deletion. I browsed the datastore in which are several different files LOG files, XML files, VMSN, NVRAM, VMSD, VMX, VMXF, and a series of VMDK files, which I've been told would the be the "main" files for the virtual machine.

The files I had listed were:

Webserver0.vmdk

Webserver0-000001.vmdk

Webserver0-000002.vmdk

Webserver0-000003.vmdk

Webserver0-000004.vmdk

Webserver0-000005.vmdk

Webserver0-000006.vmdk <---This one being the newest date.

Not knowing what to do with these I right clicked on the Webserver0-000001.vmdk to see what was available and saw a dropdown menu of options. However, I may have accidentally double clicked and hit the "delete" option from the menu. Before I knew it that file was gone. I then could not boot the VM after. All I get is an error message:

Failed to power on virtual machine WebServer. File /vmfs/volumes/58866b0f-0a0319b0-38e0-e0db55027e66/WebServer/WebServer0-000001.vmdk was not found

I looked back in the datastore and now in place of that file is a Webserver0-000001-delta.vmdk file instead.

I assume all these files are required for the VM to operate? Have I just royally screwed myself and all these people I've been hosting? Is there a way to recover or rebuild that file and restore this machine? I do not have a backup since Veeam said their products won't work with free ESXi. I also have no money and cannot afford to pay a support ticket or buy recovery software that cost $699 at minimum!

I need help desperately!

Impossible to create datastore

Hi everyone,

Today I receive one ESXi 6.5 server. My supplier is Dell and they install the system. Currently, i just turn on the server, activate SSH and configure IPv4 address.

But i have a problem to create datastore. In fact, i have always this message : Failed to create VMFS datastore test - Cannot change the host configuration.

Here is the end of the vmkernel.log after a tentative of datastore creation :

2019-02-26T16:56:17.879Z cpu5:66129)ScsiDeviceIO: 2954: Cmd(0x439500b63f00) 0x85, CmdSN 0x13 from world 67475 to dev "naa.64cd98f00a5c9c0023527c4d17b55450" failed H:0x0 D:0x2 P:0x0 Valid sense data: 0x5 0x20 0x0.

Maybe a other logfile it's more accurate ?

Here is my disk : http://prntscr.com/mqfg6m .

Thank you in advance for your help.

USB drive not recognized after a power failure

An ESXi 5.5 U2 host is member of a vSphere 5.5 U2 infrastructure.

A USB drive is connected to the ESXi host and is connected to a guest VM.

After a general power failure the VM cannot connect to the USB drive because no USB device looks to be available.

How can I force the ESXi host recognize the USB device and make it available to the guest VM?

ESXi hosname+domain on vSphere Client don't update!

Hello everyone,

I am having a issue where I can't seem to find a way to change or update the hotname+domain of the ESXi that displays on vSphere Client when I change domain.

Ex.:

Originally I had esxi1.domain.com and I changed the whole infrstruscture to another domain called domain.local.

I changed/updated the settings at host -> configuration -> DNS and Routing to reflect the new domain and etc.. Everything is working but the ESXi hosts still shows as esxi1.domain.com instead of the new esxi1.domain.local

Any help? Thank you very much in advance!

Virtual Machine is showing as Invalid (vSphere 5.1)

$

I understand that vSphere 5.1 is EOL and we are moving on to 6.7. However, I have a strange issue that one of our virtual machines is showing as "Invalid" with no descriptions. It seems like it is unable to read the vmx file at all. The server is up and running which is good. But, there are no controls available like; "Edit settings" etc.

I've tried VMware Knowledge Base  with no luck. All ESXi hosts have been rebooted. Although the VM is powered On, still it gives option to power on and fails if I try to do so.

Any suggestions please..

I am wondering if V2V will fix this without any impact.

PS: There are no backups for this VM.

Changing vCenter default VM setting from BIOS to UEFI

We are currently looking for a way to change the default VM setting from BIOS to UEFI, so we do not need to change the API call in our third party automation tool, but the vCenter creates only UEFI VMs in the future. Does anyone has a clue where to change it?

we currently running one vCenter Server with 7 hostst on Version 5.5, about 90 VMs

I have now four new hosts and like to migrate to 6.7, means create new ESXi 6.7, one new vCenter Server 6.7

Storage is still the same...

Is there a whitepaper for the process?

can I configure the new hosts and vCenter Server into the old environment?

Thanks in advance

After minimizing console window, can't restore it. vSphere 5.5

$

This seems to be an ongoing problem with the vsphere client (not the web client). I have seen it on each of the computers I have used the vsphere client on over the past few years. The problem in that after opening a console window to a VM, if I minimize that console window and then try to unminimize it to get back to it, it usually stays hidden. The only way I can get back to it is to close the console window and then click "open console" again. Not a big deal but it is a little frustrating. Does anyone know a fix for this or is vmware planning to release a fix?

Thanks
