Upgrade from 6.0 to 6.7 both failed and succeeded. Cannot tell which

$

Hi,

I started by uppgrading our Vcenter appliance from 6.0 to 6.7. I then used the Update Manager in Vcenter to upgrade 1 of our 2 hosts (in cluster) to 6.7.

I got the "Errno 39: Directory not empty" error and followed KB: VMware Knowledge Base

I then restarted the upgrade and it chugged along fine. It seemed to complete normally on the physical hosts monitor, but in Vcenter the progress bar seemed stuck. After a while the TASK says "cannot execute upgrade script on host". The new version number (6.7) shows both on the physical monitor and in Vcenter.

When I try to rerun the "Remediation" it just keeps giving "cannot execute upgrade script on host" immediately. I have checked that there is disk space on the host.

Also, the host seems to work as normal. It runs VMs etc. Did the upgrade succeed? Is it normal to get this error when rerunning the remediation?

Thank you.

Is it possible to change the base URL of the HTML5 client?

My host is ESXi 6.7. Is it possible to change the base URL of the HTML5 client? Im setting up a reverse proxy (Traefik) and would like to configure my ESXi host in it as a subdirectory. When I attempt to access it through the reverse proxy it rewrites the url. This has been fixed in other apps I have behind the proxy by setting the base url to include the subdirectory.

Example:

Reverse Proxy: www.example.com/esxi

When I type in that url it gets changed to www.example.com/ui (this does not work as the reverse proxy is not configured for /ui)

I would need it to go to www.example.com/esxi/ui

Is there someplace in the HTML5 Client (or via CLI on the host) that I could change the base url?

vSphere Perl SDK6.7, connect.pl & vmcontrol.pl throwing exception while connecting to VCenter.

I've installed vSphere Perl SDK6.7 on windows server 2012. And while using connect.pl & vmcontrol.pl scripts to manage VMs hosted in VCenter, I'm getting error like :

Error connecting to server at '<VCenter-host>/sdk/webService': Perhaps host is not a vCenter or ESX server.

>perl vmcontrol.pl --server <VCenter-Host> -username "user" -password "password" --operation shutdown --vmname <VM>

ESXi version is 6.5 .

Earlier ESX version was 5.5., and that time we were able to manage VMs using VMRUN tool, but post this upgrade, vmrun tool started throwing errors like "communication error", and when I tried to setup alternate using Perl SDK, I'm not able to connect to VCenter and not able to perform any operations. I've to just manage power-on\off operations.

Thanks.

Any successful directpath passthrough of Intel HD Graphics?

I have been unable to successfully pass-through my intel HD graphics to a VM, yet i have managed to do it with my pci-e raid cards and pci wireless card. What gives? When i add it to the VM, the VM boots but when it tries to initialize its new gpu, it freezes!

Specs:

CPU: Inetl Core i7-3770 w/ Intel HD Graphics 4000 ARK | Intel® Core™ i7-3770 Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.90 GHz)

MB: Gigabyte GA-H77-DS3H http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4146#ov

I have tried using ESXi 5.0, ESXi 5.1, ESXi 5.5

I have tried multiple configurations of VMs:

- Win7 32-bit BIOS

- Win7 32-bit EFI

- Win7 64-bit BIOS

- WIn7 64-bit EFI

- Win8 64-bit BIOS

I am beginning to think that this is not possible, that is why I pose this question. Has anyone been able to pass-through their Intel HD Graphics successfully? Please tell me about it.

Much appreciated

Setting Advanced parameters

I'm trying to set a path for ScratchSpace for a single ESXi 5.0 host and receive the following error from my command below;

# vim-cmd hostsvc/advopt/update ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation string /vmfs/volumes/[datastore GUID]/.scratch

(vmodl.fault.InvalidArgument) {

 dynamicType = <unset>,

 faultCause = (vmodl.MethodFault) null,

 invalidProperty = <unset>,

 msg = "A specified parameter was not correct.

",

}

I've read some other posts in the forum that this may be a bug? If that's true is there any workaround or fix? Thanks in advance.

Pink Screen on 6.7 Updates - Why?

$

The last stable update I've been able to use for 6.7 on my machine was build 10176879 -- attempting to update to any of the newer patches / releases has been a failed attempt each time, getting so far as to start booting until appearing with the pink screen as seen in the image below. As far as I can tell the system BIOS is the latest version -- so at this point I'm a little bit lost as to what's causing the issue.

Motherboard: Intel S1200SP

BIOS Version: S1200SP.86B.03.01.0038.062620180344

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1270 v6

"Remote access for ESXi local user account 'root' has been locked for 120 seconds..."

Hello everyone

I got the following message every hour:

"Remote access for ESXi local user account 'root' has been locked for 120 seconds..."

I found a lot of information how to figure this out:

Security.AccountLockFailures. Maximum number of failed login attempts before a user’s account is locked. Zero disables account locking.

Security.AccountUnlockTime. Number of seconds that a user is locked out.

But I didn't get out where to find the source IP who is trying to access our ESXi hosts. Isn't it in /var/log/auth.log ?

Thank you for your input.

How do I rename folders in ESXi on a datastore?

$

This might sound a bit noobish, but after the upgrade of my ESXi machine to 6.5.0 Update 2 (Build 8935087) (and afterwards not being able to use the vSphere desktop client anymore), I'm quite puzzled on how to rename a folder on a datastore in the "web client". I always copied virtual machines by creating a folder and copy/pasting the files of a vm template in it and then import it as a new machine.

esxi.JPG

I don't see a rename option anywhere, neither the files nor the directories seem to be able to be renamed (and also selecting multiple files at once). I can move and copy directories, but not the badly needed renaming. What am I not seeing here?

Best regards,

Matthias

moving a host from one cluster to another

I need to move a host that has running vms from one cluster to another. The source hosts and the hosts on the destination cluster shares commong dvs.

what is best way to do this?

I tried to disconnect and remove the host but lost the dvs and all the vms are now left with a blank network PG. They are all still online.

SO I added the host back into the source cluster and readded the host back into the dvs and still the vms are still left with a blank Port group setting

any idea?

Hi all,

I've added the usb controller and 2 usb Hard drives to a Windows 2016 VM in vcentre but the drives do not show up to add them in VMRC so they are not visible within the VM.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Are vSphere switches and network settings backed up during a host config backup?

$

Just want to confirm that vSphere switches and network settings are backed up using the following guide - VMware Knowledge Base

If so, will they be restored with the following command example

Set-VMHostFirmware -VMHost ESXi_host_IP_address -Restore -SourcePath backup_file -HostUser username -HostPassword password

I need to clear an array config and recreate the array and logical drive where ESXi is installed and don't want to have to recreate the network settings for that ESXi host.

Thanks in advance!

How to port forwarding for network adapter on Virtual Machine?

$

0

I installed clean ESXi 6.5

Then I installed Windows 7 as Virtual Machine

In settings I added some network adapters, for example 192.168.0.101, 192.168.0.102

Let 192.168.0.199 to be ESXi address

How to make port forwarding in my router for external access to 192.168.0.101, 192.168.0.102?

It seems that router does not see that IPs

In routers settings I added 192.168.0.199 with 443 port – so I can access ESXi Web UI from external

If I add network adapters IP like this, I can not access

But in my local network I can access to 192.168.0.101, 192.168.0.102 – I can ping them

Firewall turned off in Windows 7

I can also access to Microsoft Remote Desktop in my home network (at 192.168.0.101 for example)

So, how to fix this?

How to access to Remote Desktop from outside?

Maybe I should add additional settings?

Thank you

Adding second subnet for one vmnic?

$

Hello. I have read a few articles on this subject but I still can't seem to do this. Firstly, let me give my specs, and then the scenario.

I have a Dell T620, 96Gb of RAM, 1 Xeon 2620 Hex core processor. I'm using ESXi 6.0. Nothing crazy on it. 1 NIC from my physical server is in use here.

I'm trying to build a CCIE lab using EVE-NG. While it's not a requirement, there's a certain topology setup that uses two subnets, and loads all of the necessary configs into flash so they can be loaded up within seconds, rather than configuring new labs when a new topic comes up. ANYWAYS...

I have a MAC that I do everything on. My subnet for my LAN within my house is 192.168.69.0/24 and that's the management LAN for the sole port-group I have. I'm able to communicate to and from any VM on this subnet with my MAC.

Now here's where I think my lack of knowledge with ESXi comes into play. I am trying to add a second subnet, which corresponds with my vmnet1 on my MAC - 172.16.55.0/24. My vmnet1 on my MAC is .1. A second interface on my EVE-NG VM uses .2. I CANNOT for the life of me, communicate on this subnet. If I add 172.16.55.3 on another VM, i'm able to ping WITHIN the ESXi environment, but nothing communicates to and from my MAC on this subnet. It's most likely a configuration issue.

Not sure if this matter, but I do have VM Fusion installed on my MAC as well. I'm not sure if this is interfering with anything; i.e. if it adds some type of configurations locally on my MAC that may override anything that the ESXi needs to use...I don't know if that even makes sense haha. The VM Fusion has a windows 7 VM on it, with a second interface on the 172.16.55.0/24 subnet, in which I could hit that on my MAC, but that cannot hit anything within the ESXi environment either. The purpose of this windows VM is to be used as a TFTP server.

I'm just going to put this here as a reference. This is the article i'm following to get this lab setup.

Nick's CCIE Progress and Methods: Method Post - Using EVE-NG for INE ATC Labs

I get stuck on Step 2, where after the two pictures, he has a "Note" under the second picture that states you should be able to ping that IP that you configured on the EVE-NG pnet1 interface.

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to be as thorough as possible the first time around.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
