Maximum vCPU allocation for Windows Server 2008 Enterprise running on vSphere 4 Enterprise (ESXi 4.1 )

Hi,

I have a Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (x64) guest running on ESXi 4.1 with a vSphere 4 Enterprise licence. I believe that both the guest and hypervisor should be licensed for and support 8 virtual CPUs, yet when I add more than 4 and attempt to power on the VM, I get "Power On virtual machine [VM name] Virtual machine has 8 virtual CPUs, but the host only supports 4. The number of virtual CPUs may be limited by the guest OS selected for the virtual machine or by the licensing for the host."

The guest OS selected is "Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (64 bit)". There is no option in the drop-down box for 2008 Enterprise.

Is this configuration actually supported? If so, what do I need to do to get it working?

Thanks in advance,

Matt
