"Local" file missing

Hello,

I tried to recover the password of Esxi through ubuntu as watched some videos on youtube but it didn't work.

When I started server again I upgraded it to 6.5 from 5.5. Then again I tried to recover password by using ubuntu but it didn't work. Then again I tried to get back to 5.5 but failed as when it was in the process it showed pink screen.

I then tried to upgrade it to 6.5 again to check if it will recover but after completing 92% it's showing error cannot find "Local" file "it's the same file used I edited to get the password but seems I messed during the process.

Can I recover back Esxi  "I got my password now" as there are many machines and storage linked to it.

What should be my next step?

Thanks

Danish

Unable to delete partition, datastore after re-installing Vmware

We needed to retask hardware for a project and found that re-installing vmware will not erase the physical hard drive. We have tried to un-mount and delete the partions and datastore but it reports that is can't change the host configuration or that the disk is in use.

We have installed vmware on an sd card and have a single 500gb drive.

We have tried everything that can be done from the web client and with no luck.

Any idea where to go from here? We running 6.5 update 1.

Thanks

non persistent storage error message

Hello,

Have a fresh new install of vsphere 6.0 Update 3a dated 7-11-2017.

The vsphere client is giving me an error message on the splash screen.

"Configuration Issues

System logs on localhost.localdomain are stored on non-persistent storage"

I have other servers in the cluster that were upgraded from earlier 6.0 that are not getting this message at all and are in fact logging to the local datastore, just not /scratch though.

No configuration other than assigning an ip and password to the esx server has been done to the new servers.

We have no desire to log host information to shared storage.

Thanks

Removed host profile but still receive error that apply failed

I am receiving the following error after attaching and remediating a  host profile on an ESXi 6.5d host.

Host profile apply failed with error. Cannot execute command to configure or query coredump file.

I performed the following to attempt to address the issue:

Entered maintenance mode.
Detached Host Profile.

Connected via SSH.

Ran the following to reset coredump file location:

esxcli system coredump partition set -u
esxcli system coredump partition get
esxcli system coredump partition set -s -e true
esxcli system coredump partition get

Rebooted host.
Removed from maintenance mode.

I still receive an error - "Host profile apply failed with error. Cannot execute command to configure or query coredump file.", even-though the coredump file is active and configured and the host profile is no longer attached.

Any suggestions?

Trying to edit a vm, results in the error you can see. If I reload the page it works again, but one time only.

Firefox 55.0.2 (it works ok in chrome ..) - no love for the only browser that does not sell you?

"User root@127.0.0.1 logged in" every minute ?

Hi,

We observe that 2 ESXi 5 Hosts in the same cluster (We only have 2 ESXi Hosts in that Cluster) get the following message every minute:

User root@127.0.0.1 logged in

User root logged out

Both ESXi Host and vCenter Server are of the latest build.  We also don't get such message in other Clusters of ESXi 5 Hosts.

That 2 ESXi Hosts are running on IBM Server with the latest IBM CIM installed.

Your advice is sought.

Thanks

What host does during destroying svmmirror?

I have a questiong for svmotion.

I move the vm to a new datastore, but it showed the error "Failed to resume destination VM". Then I check the vmkernel.log, some sentences caught my attention:

Hi, is it possible to create an image/ISO file, the content of this image file is a WIndows Server OS 2012 R2, update this with the recent updates and save this as a template for future installations BUT I would like this to be a sysprep'd image so that by the time I import this image, it has a new SID for the server. Is this possible?

Petition VMware to Open Source ESXi Thick Client

$

It's been almost 3 years (1189 days to be exact) since kgottleib openly complained about the web client:

vSphere Web Client SUCKs so bad that my experience managing and supporting VMware has turn to SH**!

I was able to live with a slightly dysfunctional hybrid of old thick client, and the web UI, but as of 6.5 build 5969303, VMware has decided to fully deprecate the old thick client and it will NOT connect.

Despite promises to make the Web UI better, VMware seems incapable of actually delivering a reliable web product, and after 1189 days, 169365 views, and 213 Likes, I don't have any faith in VMware management to resolve this issue.

Instead, I'd like to ask the VMware community to petition Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware (actually - might as well petition the entire executive team and board), to Open Source the old thick client. I have far greater faith in the VMware community to create a reliable piece of software than this multi-billion dollar travesty. I'm sure it'd be quicker and cheaper to upload the source to GitHub than to continue this charade of broken promises. This would also free up VMware development and testing resources to focus on making their virtualization products great again - instead of trying to be a failed web company.

If you support this petition: Like this post or add your comments.

In a few weeks I'll hand deliver it to their Palo Alto office - that's how pissed off I am.

I need some help trying to track down the command line for adding a new network adapter to multiple guest virtual machines at once and designating the port group name.

I tried using the below command and it does create the new adapter but it's grayed out and I can't make any changes to it other than delete it via the GUI. Any help is appreciated!!!

Possible bug in ESXi6 update 2 regarding disk space - or am I misunderstanding?

$

Hi all,

I'm running ESXi6 update 02 on a 250GB SSD as main data store.

On the side I created a second datastore of 120 GB to add in its entirety as a secondary HDD to a VM.

Here is my basic setup:

VM1: 100 GB

VM2: 60 GB

VM3: 25 GB

VM4: 25 GB

26GB ish free. Disks are fully provisioned, eager zeroing.

All VM's have run successfully for extended periods of time.

What happened twice now is the following, in two different scenarios:

When editing a VM (like changing some memory or boot setting) I get the following error:

"The disk capacity specified is greater than the amount available in the datastore". This happens both in the web UI and in the vSphere client.

Looking at the HDD page in the VM properties it shows the HDD size I originally picked, 100GB for VM1 and 60GB for VM2, but below the box where you enter their size it says "Max 26ish GB" - the amount of free space in the datastore.

So for whatever reason ESXi6 isn't considering that these disks are existing ones, and the "free space" check should not be performed, it should just realize these are previously created HDDs and boot.

This is a hard stop and you cannot make any other configuration changes while that message happens.

I've gotten past it by flipping configuration pages and swapping between vSphere and UI a few times and the machines booted again, but I fully expect to be hit with it again next time I have to take the Vm's down.

The other VM's with 25GB HDD's boot just fine because the free space on the datastore is slightly bigger than the 25GB of their disks so the check is passed.

I got the same error when I added datastore 2 to a VM as dedicated disk (one of the VM's with 25GB from datastore 1 as HDD1). I simply made Datastore 2 on the second HDD, allocated it fully to Datastore 2 and then allocated the maximum, or close to the maximum, of the available space to a HDD2 on one of the VM's. The exact same error would happen - it would check free space on datastore 2 and say that the 120GB or so was way bigger than the free space on the datastore, due to the same symptom as above (it checking against free space erroneously).

Has anyone experienced this before?

Many thanks

Ruben

What is the best way to utilize Lag and/or get the most performance for file transfer from VM

$

We are running a Win 2106 server in a VM that is hosting 8TB of engineering data. We had originally planned to lag 4x10gbe ports to the switch for load balancing only to find out that the IP hash algorithm only chooses one port to send data and does not use all 4 to make a 40gbe link (Right?)

I thought I read somewhere about making several 2 port lag groups and then it would send out on both of those groups at that point getting more performance but I am not sure how that would be done as I am only able to choose a single vswitch for each Virtual machine.

We have the essentials license, this is an smb customer with large data needs so I want to make the file transfer between the server and the workstations as fast as possible. The budget did allow for large amounts of storage AND a San so we are doing it as local storage.

At this time the lag group is setup and working and I have no way to know how it is utilizing those 4 ports.

I would like to know how to optimize this for the best possible performance. The server has 4x1gbe and 4x10gbe ports on it.

Thanks

Johnny

Cannot Login to WebAccess but to ESXi console

Hi *,

i can access the ESXi console with my root & pw, but not the WebAccess with "root" & pw. The pw is the same, there are no spell / keyboard language issues.

We have a single ESXi 6.5 (4887370), no vCenter. No Domain Account, just local.

Best regards

Max
