USB device unavailable after shutdown

So, we had a VM that was using an external USB drive for a legacy system (don't ask, I didn't set it up). After I put the host in Maintenance mode, and shut it down to add memory, the USB drive is no longer available for VMs to use.

It's there in lsiusb, but not available when trying to connect it to the VM.

usbarbitrator is running

Does anyone have information on an update to ESXi to support the new AMD CPUs? I have an 1800X crying to run ESXi. At this point I am forced to run VMware Workstation Pro on it due to incompatibility with ESXi.

Thank you for any info you may be able to share.

ESXi 6.5 Update does not see USB Key for boot

With my Dell T420 Server I boot ESXi 6.0 from the internal Kingston USB key.

Today I downloaded and burned ISO version 6.5, but when I launch the update, I see only the RAID for VMs and not the USB key for booting.
Can it not be compatible with 6.0 and not 6.5?
What can I do? There is a free SATA port for an SSD.

Thanks in advance.

ISCSI Design question

Hello community

I am asking a practical question following the design of an iscsi architecture.

We're going to have 14 ESXi (vSphere 6.5) each with 2 network cards (10 GbE), connected to 2  different cisco switches (for redudancy)

The SAN device will have 8 10GbE iscsi ports

Network team build 2 séparates subnet network and vlan, so we can't use iscsi port binding

Do we need to create on ESXi server 2 software iSCSI adapters , bind each vmkernel/vmnic individually to each software iSCSI adapter?

Thanks for your input

Cheers

Ricco

Preferred path not available Update 3

Hi all,

Since I updated some of my ESXi hosts to 6.0 Update 3 I'm unable to change Preferred path for my LUNs.It still works on all hosts which are on Update 2 I've also update vCenter server to U3. Anyone else noticed this issue?

PS: Another thing I noticed today, I don't see VM name under Target when automatic DRS migration occurs. For some VM I can see it but mostly this field is empty.

Windows Server 2008 guest having problems accessing RDM physical SATA drive

$

I have installed a 4TB SATA drive in my ESXI 6.5 host - all Dell Optiplex 3010. I have created an RDM, and added it (using VSphere client) to my Windows Server 2008 guest. I formatted the drive (NTFS) from within the guest O/S, assigned it a drive letter of K:, and copied across a large amount of data to it. Yesterday all seemed well. Today the K: drive is not visible from within the guest O/S. Windows Disk Manager shows the drive as a Basic Disk with 1678.02GB capacity (not the actual 4TB capacity). It shows no partitions - the capacity is all unallocated.

The Hardware section for the guest VM in vSphere shows the disk as "Mapped Raw LUN", with compatibility mode "Physical".

Any idea what might have happened, why the partition is no longer accessible, and why the physical capacity of the drive is being misrepresented in Disk Manager?

Disable or rename root account?

I am running VMWare 6.5 on a hosted datacenter machine where I do not have direct console access to the server. The web management console MUST be exposed to the whole Internet and there is nothing I can do about it.

In order to keep myself from getting locked out by hackerz sieging the root account, I have no choice but to disable the account lockout protection:

Advanced Settings -> Security.AccountLockFailures = 0

Really what I'd like to do is rename or delete "root" and replace it with another account name (acting effectively as two passwords ... the username and the password to get into it) so that attempts to hack root will always fail.

So far my poking around in the web console indicates this is not possible.

,

About the only solution I have been able to come up with so far is to make another extremely obscurely named account, promote it to have all root privileges, and then set the root account password to something absolutely ridiculous that will never be used, cannot be remembered, is gibberish using every allowable character, and is at least 200-500 characters long.

vSphere 6.5 U1 - Driver for Dell PERC H710 Mini

I just upgraded my Dell PowerEdge R320 to 6.5 U1.  When I go into the Host - Monitor - Hardware - Storage, I get the message "The Small Footprint CIM Broker Daemon (SFCBD) is running, but no data has been reported. You may need to install a CIM provider for your storage adapter.".

The Dell PERC H710 mini appears to be compatible: VMware Compatibility Guide - I/O Device Searchhttps://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/detail.php?deviceCategory=io&productid=39513

I found an older post about needing the CIM driver because Dell doesn't provide one: http://en.community.dell.com/techcenter/b/techcenter/archive/2013/07/01/monitoring-dell-poweredge-raid-controllers-in-vm…

Any help/advice on how I can get my storage data?  I'm just connecting to the web GUI for the host, I don't have vCenter setup yet.

LBT VS Etherchannel

I am installing few rack servers to put in a new VMware data center. My focus is networking on the physical switch side.

Each server has two 10GbE nic cards for vDS to support multiple ports group. I am configuring it to  use "route based physical nic load." I do not have a clear picture on physical switch configuration side. Let's say if I go with " Route based physical nic load" (LBT), what would I need to get configured on Cisco physical switch.

Do I still need  EtherChannel trunk port on the physical switch or just trunk port? I was asked by the network team whether I need LAG, port channel/EtherChannel, etc.  I would appreciate if you share/guide me some information.

ESXi datastore configuration

I have an application where I need to sustain 2+ GByte/sec throughput and im finding that the default datastore configuration is not supplying anywhere near that throughput.

Im looking for a way to create my datastore as a striped configuration on 4 luns from 2 different EMC arrays accross a set of 4x 16GB FC ports.

This will give me the required bandwidth, but im not finding how to setup the datastore as a stripe of luns.

Also, it would be very helpfull if I could resize the datastore, by adding/removing luns, but again im not finding any way to do this.

Can anyone point me to the instructions on how to stripe, add and remove luns from a datastore?

Thanks

Networking performance between 2 VMs

I have 2x VM's, both located on the same ESXi6 server.

The vswitch is setup correctly and both VM's are on that same switch.

The network is a 1GB interfrace, and both VM's have 1GB interfaces.

However, I can only achieve 1MB/s between the 2 VMs.

Looking for ways to diagnose and fix this issue.

Suggestions, questions, clarifications, please let me know.

vSphere ESXi 6.5.0 Hardware Sensors

Hello Everyone,

I have a Q170 based motherboard and have successfully loaded ESXi 6.5.0. However, ESXi does not display any Hardware Sensor Data and reports "No Sensor Data Available".

Does ESXi require BMC or IMPI to obtain hardware database? Does it not get at least basic sensor information from the CPU sensors, etc.?

Thanks

ESXi 6.0 Console Connection Lag

$

I am running Juniper's vMX 17.2R1.13 on ESXi 6.0 currently and have been experiencing significant lag on the console window connecting to the Control Plane VM (vCP). I am currently running ESXi 6.0.0 build 3620759 and client 1.21.0 on a Laptop with an i7 7700HQ processor and 32gb of memory. It is running on Windows 10 Home, and the ESXi VM itself has been allocated 24gb in VMWare Workstation 12. Workstation was given 2 processors/4 cores for 8 total logical cores and I have assigned 2 CPU and 2gb of memory currently to the Juniper vCP VM.

I noticed that during boot the VM itself is using close to 100% of its CPU. It will fluctuate down a little bit once it is fully booted but I am not sure if this is the issue. Is the console connection tied directly to CPU usage or is this possibly a limitation with the console being opened in the browser (chrome)? It seems to scroll text, almost like loading an image on a dial up connection. I am not sure if increasing the CPU count for this VM will help it significantly enough, or if it would just take more resources and it's something I either have to tweak elsewhere or perhaps even just learn to live with.

Is there a better program that can be tied into ESXi for use in console connections? Can you tie it to something like SecureCRT or another terminal program in any way since it's a nested VM? Sorry I am new to much of ESXi and still playing around with it. I am a networking guy systems stuff is new to my world. Thanks!
