ESXi 6.5u3 - dual 10GB vmnics stops working after update

Hi,

Having trouble with a Gen 10 host, Patching to the latest version and one of the dual 10GB vmnics stops working

so, ive installed, HPE Gen9 Plus Custom Image for ESXi 6.5 U3 Install CD

The two VMNICs at this point are working fine, then, when i upload the latest patch and upgrade/install via command line, after reboot, one of the VMNICs stops working. i'm updated the firm ware on the Gen10, replaced the the physical adapter, checked all the compatibility matrix. cant understand why it would stop working after i patch it. i have deleted the Image and the patch, downloaded a fresh copy and reinstalled, still having the same problem

the build and SPP are compatible

let me know if anyone has any thoughts

Regards

Arshad

Esxi 6.5 2 host 2 public IP

Hi, I don't have much experience with virtualization I'm just netadmin so maybe i'm asking something dumb.
So i have this scenario as you can see on attached file. Left side works perfectly but we need 2 different public IP for both server. For right side I've created new Port group and new Virtual switch.

on second server I'm getting local ip and also have ping but can't do tracert or ping google.com facebook.com or anything with domain name. so it's domain problem as i'm guessing. but this happens when I'm using that second virtual switch.it's not a router problem or something like that because I've tried to connect PC directly to router 2 and in this scenario it works perfectly. I don't think also that it is windows problem because i've tried to several ones and also tried with linux and its still the same.I guess it's connected to esxi and I'm doing something wrong with configuring of it.
If you have any ideas what I'm doing wrong or how this scenario can work please give me some advice.
Thanks.

Network Adapters and VLAN (optional) greyed out in DCUI

I am studying for my VCP exam and I am using a nested setup in Workstation. Suddenly I don't have access to the network adapters in the DCUI. I have migrated both NICs used for management to a vmkernel management port group in a distributed switch.

Does someone know what is going on here? Google gave me this hint Configure Management Network Greyed out in DCUI

But in my case the hosts are still connected to vCenter and are working fine no issues anywhere.

Autoconnecting USB devices to remote ESXi

Hello,

I have a VM running on a ESXi server, a tablet connected to my desktop PC via USB and I am able to pass it to the VM via both VMRC and Workstation. The only thing that I am not able to do is automatic passthrough: when I reboot the tablet (which behaves exactly like turning it off and then on again) I need to make it automatically reconnect to the same VM on the EXSi server (the same way as Workstation when it sets a connection rule for a given  VM). Is there a way to accomplish this (any way, even a scripting language would do)?

Thank you in advance

Hi everyone.

After upgrading from 6.5 to 6.7 our host displays the above error in vCenter. Everything seems to work fine, but can't make to error disappear.

I can't seem to find the service under "services", so I can enable/configure it.

Any help is much appreciated.

ESXi 6.7 U3 and Realtek NICs (RTL8111C and RTL8105E)

$

Hello guys!

I'm new on VMware world, and I need some help.

I installed ESXi 6.7 U3 but my NICs aren't working correctly.

NIC 1: RTL8111C

0000:02:00.0 Network controller Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller [vmnic0]

         Class 0200: 10ec:8168

NIC 2: RTL8105E

0000:03:00.0 Network controller Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL810xE PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller

         Class 0200: 10ec:8136

After some research on the net, I found a driver (net55-r8168) for RTL8111C (10ec:8168) and how to integrate it on ESXi ISO.

It worked well for a couple of hours, then it suddenly disapeared from my system. Couldn't ping my server from my machine, neither ping from the server.

Then I rebooted and it come back... but again, after some time it's gone.

Now I don't know what to do with this two nics.

The RTL8111C don't work well as I said, and I couldn't find any driver for the RTL8105E. The last driver for RTL8105E only work up to ESXi 6.0.

Drivers used:

RTL8111C - net55-r8168 (https://vibsdepot.v-front.de/wiki/index.php/Net55-r8168)

RTL8105E - net-r8101 (https://vibsdepot.v-front.de/wiki/index.php/Net-r8101) - don't even integrate on ESXi 6.7

"Remote access for ESXi local user account 'root' has been locked for 120 seconds..."

Hello everyone

I got the following message every hour:

"Remote access for ESXi local user account 'root'  has been locked for 120 seconds..."

I found a lot of information how to figure this out:

Security.AccountLockFailures. Maximum number of failed login attempts before a user’s account is locked. Zero disables account locking.

Security.AccountUnlockTime. Number of seconds that a user is locked out.

But I didn't get out where to find the source IP who is trying to access our ESXi hosts. Isn't it in /var/log/auth.log ?

Thank you for your input.

Simple SH script started with cron job, will not persist and settings/files are deleted after reboot.

Hello,

I created a simple little script to do a rescan of the storage adapters on the server, 60 seconds after boot.

I created a file called hbascan.sh and in that file i have this line "sleep 60s;esxcli storage core adapter rescan --all"

I placed this script in the /bin folder on the ESXi host

I edited the "/var/spool/cron/crontabs/root" in here i added "@reboot sh /bin/hbascan.sh" at the end/bottom of the file.

I then killed the Cron job after finding the correct ID

I then edited the "/etc/rc.local/" and added at the end of the file 3 rows with text.

/bin/kill $(cat /var/run/crond.pid)

/bin/echo '@reboot sh /bin/hbascan.sh' >> /var/spool/cron/crontabs/root

/bin/busybox crond

I saved the file and ran the command "sh /sbin/auto-backup.sh"

Problem is that when i reboot the server everything is gone, the script is gone and the changes to root and rc.local is also gone.

I did the edit of the files with winscp as i am not really confident in "vi"

I am not entirely sure what's wrong, it could be syntax or maybe file rights?

I followed a guide for this online and it's almost identical to the guide, only i did not provide any path to logs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can see 2 virtual disks and a physical disk (hot spare). I can see RAID level and number of physical drives but no information about individual disks.

No S.M.A.R.T. info logged into syslog either:

cat /var/log/syslog.log | grep smartd | wc -l

0

Not only I'm unable to check individual disks but I continue seeing false positives (Status: degraded) as well as this:

vmware-disks.JPG

There were no amber lights on any of the caddies. I shut the server down, reseated all disks, booted into BIOS and confirmed in RAID settings all disks were reporting healthy and both arrays optimal.

Please advise.

ESXi freezes when storage over ISCSI to Synology times out during high load

Hello,

I have a Fujitsu RX 300 S7 with ESXi 6.0 U3 and a Synology RS2416+ containing a RAID 10 with 4x 4 TB WD Red HDDs. I have created a file-based LUN on the Synology and I have connected the Target to the ESXi over 3 NICs via round-robin. This means, that all of the 3 NICs are used for the connection between the ESXi and the Synology (I have followed this tutorial).

I have made several tests with WMware IOMeter and CrystalDiskMark and the results are great (350 Mb/s and ~50k IOPS read), but during the tests, the ESXi hypervisor freezes. If I disable the Target on the Synology and enable it back again, the ESXi and the test VMs start working as if nothing had happened.

In the vmkernel.log I can find find several entries containing this line: "Waiting for timed out HB" (please find a screenshot attached)

Whan is the cause of the error? How can I fix the timeouts? I really need the higher throughput (=3 NICs) for better performance.

Thank you in advance!

Kind regards,

Intel VMD and VROC support on ESXi 7.0

Hello,

I know this has been asked before, but there is no definite answer...and both related questions were before release of esxi 7.0.

Reading this https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/memory-and-storage/ssd-software/Intel_VMD_NVMe_VMWare_User_Gui…

as another user has mentioned, it is supposedly supported as long as the drives are Intel, u2 form factor and on a hot plugable back plane...

On the VMware compatibility guide, the intel VMD driver is listed as native in the esxi 7.0

(iavmd version 2.0.0.1055-3vmw)

I am planning on ordering a new server for hosting esxi, and I have to clear this up before choosing my configuration...

(server will be a supermicro, most probably 1029U-TRTP2 with intel's p4610 nvme drives)

It will be a single host, no HA, vSAN or whatever, all VM's on the local datastore which I would like to be on the NVMe drives.

However I don't feel at ease having a single drive...I would prefer having a raid 1 array with 2 of the aforementioned drives.

Regular Backups will be implemented (still haven't decided on which path I will follow for this), but still if the single drive fails, I will have downtime...

Putting the 2 drives behind a raid controller, defies the purpose of going nvme...

Right now I am stuck with an HP DL380 G6 server running esxi 5.5. So unfortunately no way of testing...

So my question is, has anyone been able to implement this successfully?

stay safe...

VM suddenly only boots to black screen

Hello,. Yesterday morning I ran into this issue which I have been searching for clues and answers to for hours to no avail.

We have a dell server running 6.7 U2 with 2 windows server 2008 r2 VMs.  It's been running without issue since July of last year.

This morning, something happened- not sure what- to cause the server to reboot. When it came back up, 1 of the vms booted just fine.  But the 2nd VM would only boot to a black screen.  After some troubleshooting I found that when on this black screen you could ping the server by it's IP address, but not hostname. I also figured out that you could boot it up normally in safe mode and all was well. I tried all sorts of things to get normal boot to work properly with no luck at all.

What ended up working is why I am posting because I don't understand why it worked-. We had 4 CPUs assigned to the VM originally, I changed it to 2 on a whim and low and behold it booted normally!  What?!   This is a production server for a legacy software.. is why it's still running 08 r2.. so I didn't have the luxury of changing it back to 4 to see if it still works since the server had been down for 5 hours as it was.    But either way... Why would changing this have a effect like that at all?  I'm not even sure why I tried it.. I was grasping for straws.

Thoughts?

W10 Guest Crashes After Nvidia GRID K2 GPU Pass-Through

Hello VMware-ers,

I've struggled with this GPU issue for a while. See my setup below, and let me know if anyone has any ideas!

Problem: Any sort of stress on the GPU and it crashes the guest, and restarts. In order to utilize the GPU after the crash (even running shell commands in esxi host), require you to reboot the host. Small memory dumps are uploaded below. With the GPU/VM in pass-through, I have to use VNC to login.

Thank you for any help/suggestions!

ESXi Host #1 ver. 6.5

Dell Precision T5600

Enabling an HBA for use in ESXi 6.5

It's been just under a week since we figured out the last issue, but now I'm getting pretty close to the end-game. I'll try to keep it short, for all of you busy experts out there.

I have an HBA (LSI SAS9201-16e) connected to a drive cage (Kingwin MKS-435TL) that is holding four SAS HDDs (IBM Storwize V7000 98Y3241). I wish to be able to pass each individual drive to a different VM. I originally thought that this would involve SR-IOV, but now I am not so sure. Instead of wandering around in the dark, I'll ask this:

What is the recommended method for enabling passthrough of individual drives, that are connected via an HBA?

If you want/need more info about my setup, tell me - I'll give you the info you request.

Here are some of the sources that I've read thus far:

I've had no luck getting it to work thus far:

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
