Hi,
I've installed ESXi 3.5 on USB before, but I'm having trouble with the 4.0 ISO. The directory structure seems different and includes a file:
image.tgz.temptar
I have no idea what a TEMPTAR file is!
Thanks for any help.

I'm working with VMware 6.7 using HyTrust KeyControl as a KMS/KMIP server. I need to identify a method for expiring and renewing KEKs on some regular basis. HyTrust KeyControl doesn't have any such method which is understandable since the HyTrust KMS doesn't really know anything about VMs, and interacts with vCenter.
As far as vCenter the only thing available that I've found that looks "built-in" is an option apparently available in the web client when encrypting vSAN - which we aren't doing.
As far as expiring/generating a new KEK - or DEK - when using vm encryption, all I've found is the ability to do a deep rekey (regenerate a DEK) and a shallow rekey (regenerate a KEK). The shallow rekey appears to only be an option when migrating to a different KMS/KMS cluster. And - as far as I've been able to determine so far - this rekey ability is only possible if using the powercli VMware.Encryption module from 2016 which I don't think VMware supports.
Is there KEK related functionality that I'm not finding? Such as the ability to set an expiration date on the KEK, regenerate a new KEK some other way than a module from 2016, etc?
Thanks
On ESXi 6.7 vmfs-6.
The command "esxcli storage vmfs snapshot list" is showing me a datastore that I cannot find in any vmfs partition. Where would it be finding this datastore?
My understanding is that vmfs finds datastores by scanning all the disks - by looking in the partition table for partitions of type vmfs, and then looking for metadata in these partitions. The first extent is supposed to contain the name of the datastore and the list of disk:partitions on which the extents exist.
My problem is that the command show me a datastore that is not present in the meta-data of any of the vmfs partitions. I'd like to find out where it is finding this datastore.
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Hello,
After a power failure, ESX won't boot and stuck on nfs41client loaded successfully.
It's ESXi 6 Build 5050593 on a USB.
I tried to upgrade ESX to 6.7 U3 to no avail: Vibs on the host are conflicting with vib in metadata.
Please help!
Thank you,
Hamid
Hi,
I am setting up a brand new cluster of four ESXi with plenty of resources, 10G network, ...
All the hypervisors have been configured with a script, so there is no differences or missing items between them.
But I have a problem with one of them : if I reboot it, it will not reconnect after completion. And when I do that manually, I still get an warning "Cannot synchronize host". After some time, it goes to "not responding" state but of course the ESXi and VMs are actually running fine.
What does this error really mean ?
NTP seems to be working, all hosts and VCA have the same time.
It is a dedicated infrastructure under test, so there is no network or computing resources overload.
I have disconnected/connected the host, removed it and added again, but it can not come back to a reliable state.
Any idea ?

I downloaded the Windows 10 1809 and Server 2019 ISOs the day they became available so I can start working on my templates.
I built the templates with EFI, paravirtual for the C drive and vmxnet3 adapter. I've been using this combo for other versions of windows 10/8/7and windows server 2008r2/2012r2/1016 without issue.
So far Windows 2019 (with desktop experience) seems to be ok at least for a basic vm and guest customization. Haven't tried anything else yet.
Windows 10 1809 on the other hand is very, very slow to reboot after the initial install or even just rebooting after making some changes post install. After installing the OS it took 10-15 minutes for the initial windows setup stuff (user, security settings, etc) to appear . I tried a VM set to BIOS and it seemed faster but was still quite slow. Server 2019 and other versions of windows 10 have no issue.
The hosts are esxi 6.5 and 6.7.
I haven't had a chance to try every combo of BIOS/EFI/vmxnet3/e1000e/paravirtual/lsi sas to see if one is the cause of the issue but was wondering if anyone else had noticed any issues or if it was just me?
Thanks
I have 2 servers
Server A running ESXi 5.0
Server B running ESXi 6.7 U3
On server A I have a 800 GB virtual disk that I want to copy to Server B
Whats the best method
Bother ESXi server on same subnet.
I go into the html GUI of my ESXi host with a local admin account. I went to Manage > Security & Users > Users and reset the password for the root account.
- I then rebooted the server and on the console screen I can hit the f12 key to Shutdown\Restart and that works fine and allows me to reboot the server.
- If I try to login to the GUI with to root account I get an authentication error.
- If I try to SSH into this host and use root and the same password I get an authentication error...
Are there two different types of root accounts on an ESXi host?
Dear VMWare community,
Before in version 5.5 i have no issue, but now in 6.5 and also 6.7 my swap datastore is not used by the VM's.
I got this issue with an new installation at a customer, so i created a test setup, where i also have the same issue.
My Hypervisor is stand-alone. HPE Customized Image ESXi 6.7.0 version 670.10.3.5 released on September 2018 and based on ESXi 6.7.0 Vmkernel Release Build 9484548.
I have 2 datastores, one for the VM, one for the swapping.
VM name = WinSrv with 4GB RAM.
Below: Host \ Manage \ System \ Swap \ Edit Settings, i have set the following settings:
Enabled: Yes
Datastore: datastoreSwap
Host cache: Yes
Local swap: Yes
(VM is restarted)
On the datastoreSwap there is only the sysSwap.........swp
The WinSrv.....vswp of the VM is still at the datastore of the VM.
At the settings of the VM, when u go to VM Options. below at Advanced.
The settings is set to: Default (Use the setting of the cluster or host containing the virtual machine)
It does not matter if i change this to: Datastore specified by host.
I also couldn't find any errors that the datastoreSwap could not be used or anything.
allot of documentation is or old or for vCenter, because i dont have the following "buttons"
The following doc says its for 6.5 but this version does not have vSphere Web Client navigator anymore...Configure System Swap
The following doc says its for 6.7 but this version does not have cSphere Client anymore... Configure Virtual Machine Swapfile Properties for the Host
hopefully someone can help me.
Hi guys,
I have accidentally deleted 1 -000001-delta.vmdk file from the snapshot browser. Currently i have tried few options including using third party software such as diskinternals but still can't retrieve the lost vmdk file or restore my VM state.
Currently my VM has these files:
Is there any other way that I can recover my deleted -000001-delta.vmdk or re-create a new VM with the same settings and import the main VMDK file from the previous snapshot ?
Below is my previous references but not sure if it is the solution to my problem, but mostly suggest to recreate VM with same settings and import the -flat.vmdk file and everything will be fine.
Can you recover an accidentally deleted VMDK file?
How to recover deleted vmdk - best way to proceed?

Hello!
Where can I find API versions reference for VMware vSphere 7.0 ? The tables identify the vSphere versions that support the API elements.
I know API versions reference for VMware vSphere 6.7 VMware vSphere API Reference but did not find a similar one for 7.0.
Hi there.
I'm having a issue, when trying to create a new datastore.
The local device is listed on ESXI (6.7.0)
After trying to create the datastore, the following error is listed:
As indicated on different posts, I've already attempt the following commands:

Hi,
I'm a simple user of ESXI, not admin or other.
Then, I have a Linux Image (Centos 7), that deploy in the following ESXI:
ESXi 6.5 EP 14 ESXi650-201905001 05/14/2019 13635690
Then, in this image, exist the RPM cloud-init but disabled (/etc/cloud/cloud-init.disabled file) (include, all their systemd units masked).
When I boot, the personalization script not apply.
Only apply if I deinstall the cloud-init package (yum erase cloud-init).
Then, my question is, this version has some bug related to cloud-init?
The ESXI would be only check if cloud-init is active or not, checking boot parameter or the file existence of /etc/cloud/cloud-init.disabled.
Because this behavihour? Exist other ESXI 6.5 version, later version 6.5, that check only boot parameter or this file?

Cesar Jorge
I have 2 questions about my NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB and ESXI 6.5
1) I have installed the above card on my server and set it to passthrough. Have reserved the same amount of memory as the RAM capacity to allow the VM to boot up.
When it gets into windows10 though, I can see the device, install the drivers but even after a reboot the device is not operational and has a yellow warning and reports:
This device cannot start. (Code 10)
Insufficient system resources exist to complete the API.
Can anybody shed some light on what windows is moaning about and especially what ESXi can do to make it happy?
2) I did a quick search on vGPU. Considering this is a standalone ESXi installation (no vSphere etc), can the physical GPU be shared amongst VMs (like the CPU does)?
Thanks
I have a regulatory requirement to let Nessus scan my ESXi boxes. I have two challenges with this.
Challenge 1: Turning on the ESXi Shell and SSH on. How can I automate this so it happens to all boxes at the same time?
Challenge 2: Using a Windows account I can add to let it log on to the ESXi box. Windows accounts can logon to vSphere but not ESXi. I do not want to give a way the root account.
How do you let your environment get scanned.
It will be much appreciated if you could give me some advice.
I was playing around with vSAN encryption and dragged a host out of encryption enabled vSAN cluster.
Then I executed "vm-support" on this host and tried "vm-support -x" to unzip log bundle.
Something happened during unzip, the process was stuck. No matter what I did, how long I waited, the unzip process didn't stop or finish.
So I had to restart ESXi and the power on was stuck on "Starting service vmtoolsd"
Alt-F12 gives below:
Alt-F1 gives below:
Even I tried to re-install ESXi, error occured after I entered F11
SO what is the cause? Is something wrong with the disk? What should I do to solve this ?
Can help me for the upgrade drivers VMW-ESX-6.7.0-smartpqi-1.0.4.3008-offline_bundle-14862538 ?
maybe any who can provide tutorials for the installation?
Thanks
I bought a Gigabyte motherboard (model GA-Z77-D3H) and when I go to install ESXi 5.0 It gets to the select the disk to upgrade or install page, but it says there is no local or remote disk, I have a Western Digital 500gb black drive and it sees it in the bios. Will this motherboard work with ESXI 5.0. This is my first post on the forums so thank you in advance.
Hello Bello carico.
I decided to run esxi 7 directly on the bare metal of my powerful PC ( I9 + RTX 2080ti ). Actually I'm using two PCs. The less powerful has an Intel I5 cpu and a GTX 1060 graphic card. The most powerful has an Intel I9 cpu with a RTX 2080 ti and its here that I loaded ESXI 7. I'm also using two monitors. I have attached one monitor to the HDMI ports of my old PC and the other one to the HDMI port of the PC where runs ESXI. I have created a new VM with Windows 10 x64 bit and I have added the pass through ability for my RTX 2080 ti as PCI device. Actually I have 3 problems :
1) the RTX 2080 ti driver is recognized only if I reinstall it from scratch when the VM restarts
2) I'm using Windows 10 inside the ESXI internal window, because I'm not able to turn on the monitor that I have attached to the HDMI port of the PC where run ESXI. Is there a way to do that ? With qemu and kvm this is possible.
3) I can't increase the resolution of windows 10 to 1920x1080
4) windows "see" only one monitor, the default microsoft adapter"
