nvme performance issues in ESXi 6.7

Anyone got around the nvme performance issues in ESXi 6.7?

This is what holds us from deploying in production, but I was not able to find any meaningful recommendations yet and official Support is not an option.

Change ESXI 6.5 Syslog level from debug to info

$

Hi,

I have configured syslog logging for my ESXI 6.5 hosts.

I have configured loglevel info for all syslog/vxa related entries in advanced settings.

My syslog server is filled up with crap (approx 100k messages a day from 1 host!)

I know I can edit the RHTTPPROXY config file and change it from verbose to info, but I cant find anything related to the HOSTD (and it should not be necessary to change the xml config files for something like this)...

Has anyone seen this before?

Thanks,

cannot enable PCI Passthrough of Renesas µPD720201 USB 3.0 Controller w/ ESXi 6.7u3

Hi, I would really appreciate some help here.

I just purchased an Renesas µPD720201 USB 3.0 Controller PCI-e card for my home lab running ESXi 6.7u3. However, I am not able to enable the PCI passthrough for this card. I tried in both ESXi and in vcenter. For example in ESXi, I checked this device, and clicked "toggle passthrough", it then shows "enabled/needs reboot". But after I reboot the ESXi, it is still showing disabled. Same thing happened when trying to enable this in vCenter.

My home lab system:

Asrock H87M Pro4. Currently have a LSI SAS 9707-8i pci-e card and a SIL3114 SATA PCI card passed through to two different VMs. Was hoping to passthrough the µPD720201 USB controller to a windows server vm. But the problem here is the passthrough can't even be enabled.

ISCSI connection loss after a couple days on Windows Server 2019

$

Hi Folks,

I have a strange problem. I have a ISCSI connection to my Synology NAS (RS3412xs) (latest version). I use ESXI 6.7.0 Update 2 (Build 13006603).

On this esxi a Windows Server 2019 is running and has a ISCSI connection to the NAS.

On the Windows machine I cant find a lot of information which is helpful. I have attached the Windows events.

Actually I don't even know where I have to look. On the Synology side there is no log entry at this time also no other ISCSI errors or so.

You can download the Windows log here (I zipped it): https://takeafile.com/?f=wevikopeva

Any help / idea are welcome:=)

I found the following in: /var/log/vmkernel.log

ESXI reboots after loading setup files

I want to install esxii-6.7 on a server node and the problem is when it loads all module, the server is restarted. It shows a message quickly and I can not catch it with "pause" button.

I have used this image on other nodes and it they work well.

Is there any way to view setup log? All these happen before the installation of esxi. Any idea?

Does ESXi support VROC

I have an Intel server with 4 NVMe in a RAID 10 using VROC. When I load into VMWare ESXi and try to create a datastore, the drives are all listed separately, without my VMD. Are there drivers I need to load, or is this not possible because of the way VROC is designed?

Can vSphere evaluation only be downloaded once? So all tests have to be done in 60 days?

Looking for someone to help

Hi,

I'm sorry if this post is inappropriate but I really do need help and where better find it then here.

Looking for somebody with an advanced knowledge of vmware to work with me over Team Viewer to review my environment and answer questions. I basically want to go through many of the settings I am struggling to understand, for example virtual switches. I would like to go over one of the esxi hosts and vcenter.

This is not consulting but instructional in nature. We will work out financial arrangements to be paid over Paypal, Venmo or Cashapp. I can pay up front for 1 hour then take it from there. I am hoping to get at least 2 hours in this weekend.

Thanks very much,

Jeff

I am facing a huge issue with my (3) vMware virtual machines, I accidentally deleted files from Vmware datastore , i was just deleting the unnecessary ISO files.

Requesting you kindly to help me to find a way to recover only one VM, the rest of Vms, i can rebuild another.

I am getting the following error:

Failed to start the virtual machine.

Module Disk power on failed.

Cannot open the disk ‘/vmfs/volumes/53dcf557-75fb2a56-2bcf-10604b9d8ba4/Server-4/Server-4.vmdk’ or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.

We are running ESXi 6.7 and have a file server running Window Server 2012 R2. The OS is on the C: drive and the shares are on the E: and F: drives. The shares are using NTFS. We would like to migrate this to a new VM running Windows Server 2019. We have two choices of how to handle this migration. We do use DFS namespace which should make re-pointing things after migration easier.

  1. Make new file shares on the new server and use Robocopy to migrate the data. The first run of Robocopy will take some time but subsequent runs go quick since it just copies changed files. Do one last run of Robocopy over a weekend and change DFS to repoint things
  2. Unattach the VMDKs from the old server and then attach them to the new server using a method like this
    https://ssh.guru/q-10-file-server-migration-using-vmware/

Any suggestions on which method to use? We will not be using ReFS on the new file server since ReFS still does not support everything that is supported under NTFS including not supporting disk quotas.

ESXi 6.7: Cronjob firing, but no successful execution

Hey folks,

I've got a weird problem on my free ESXi 6.7u3 Hypervisor regarding CRON.

I created a new user called "michael" with administrator privileges via the web-interface. Furthermore assigned the role "no access" to the "root" user (for hardening purposes).

privileges.PNG

Now i created the file /var/spool/cron/cronjobs/michael per SSH and pasted a simple command to test it (echo). The crontab-file looks as follows:

[michael@esxi:~] cat /var/spool/cron/crontabs/michael

28      13      *       *       *       /bin/echo "test" > /vmfs/volumes/Backup/log.txt

Then I killed the cron daemon, restarted it again and just waited until the time is over and watched the syslog.log:

[michael@esxi:~] kill $(cat /var/run/crond.pid)

[michael@esxi:~] crond

[michael@esxi:~] tail -f /var/log/syslog.log

[...]

2020-01-07T13:28:00Z crond[2108571]: USER michael pid 2108578 cmd /bin/echo "test" > /vmfs/volumes/Backup/log.txt

As you can see from the output above, the cronjob is firing properly, but no text file has been created on the given directory!

[michael@esxi:~] cat /vmfs/volumes/Backup/log.txt

cat: can't open '/vmfs/volumes/Backup/log.txt': No such file or directory

The path is correct and if I execute the command on myself in SSH, the text file will be created.

This problem also occurs when trying other cronjobs (like starting guest VMs).

Does anyone of you know why this is not working?

Thank you in advance,

Michael

Hello,

We have 20 ESXI 5.5 Servers and after a while they get a MKS error.

We checked that the DNS is not the Problem.

We restartet the Management Agent, but it did not help.

we tried the things that are listed on this link.

VMware Knowledge Base

A Restart will fix our problem but in some cases we dont have the opportunity to restart the server.

this is the Log from the VM:

vSphere 6.7 direct console issues through putty

I am running 6.7, got all the settings correct and I am outputting the ESXi console through the serial port of our server (Mkernel.Boot.logPort=none, Mkernel.Boot.gdbPort=none, Mkernel.Boot.tty2Port=com1).I am using putty on a laptop We want to be able to access the console CLI from this serial console. It seems pretty straight forward. I get our banner page once the system comes up. If I hit alt-f2 I get the login for changing the various config settings. I turn on the "enable esxi shell" I hit esc to back out. I should then just press alt-f1 to get a console window. This does not happen though. It does on a keyboard, video, mouse (KVM) setup, but through serial I can not get to the actual CLI. The screen just flashes. We are using a banner on the system, in case that makes a difference.

Is there some missing configuration that needs to be set?  The ultimate goal is to have the ESXi acessabe through a console server and remove the local KVM.
