Can't add 10GBe physical nic

$

I've been having a dog of a time trying to add a dual 10GBe nic to ESXi.  I've tried installing the drivers and everything appears that it is installing but ESXi doesn't seem to be loading the drivers for some reason.  This is an Intel NUC NUC7i5BNK host with a OWC Mercury Helios 3  Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Expansion Chassis housing the NIC.  The NIC and the expansion chassis is known good on other OS's so everything points to a configuration issue on ESXi or in the bios of the NUC.  I've enabled thunderbolt at boot so I think that rules out the BIOS.

I will make two VMs at HP server DL380 Gen 10.

One is for the Domain Server, The other is for the Application, whose operating system might be Windows7 ult or Windows server 2008.

I need your experience.

Thanks a lot in advance.

I am trying to re-add a disconnected cluster. There was an issue with the license, which has been recently resolved and the new license has been applied.

I have had a quick look through the existing threads and cannot find a comparable issue.

Things of note:

Specifically the vDRS has been turned off on the cluster, and at the moment it is not required (single host).

The IP address of the vcenter has also changed, it is very likely either of the license change or the recent IP address change have caused the issue (it needed to be moved to another network).

I have updated the vpxa.conf with the new IP address, and have set the port to no avail.

vCenter host has also been rebooted.

vpxa.log does not seem to be updating.

vCenter Version: 6.50.20000 Build 9451637

6.5.0 Build Number 8294253

There is a firewall between the 2 however the firewall is definitely not blocking traffic between the two IP addresses.

Here is the output of the syslog:

Hello,

I've changed esxi server (phisical) and whant to add this server to vCenter. I would like to use same name? but i cannot do this. when i'm trying to add new server i cannot do this.

error message is: The host XXX is already connected to YYY vCenter Server.

In vCenter Server Database in ENTITY table i don't see this hostname... (i thought may be old server was not removed correctly and some thing should be in DB). But any way i think thomthing left in DB and i don't know how to clean DB...

May be somebode had this problem...

Thanks in advance

TCP/IP Stack - Max. number of connections: 11000?

$

Hello Community,

I'm wondering what exactly means that limitation of 11000 connections in ESXi default TCP/IP Stack.

Is that a limitation of all connections for the entire Host?

Due to the fact that VMs don't use kernel Ports, is there another limitation for VMs max number of connections, just like a limits.conf file or something like that?

thanks for any help to clarify that.

Lost ability to thick provision after update 6.5.0a -> 6.5.0u2

Hi all!

I just upgraded my (free) ESXi 6.5.0a to 6.5.0u2 on my test server, and it looks as if this version is no longer able to create thick-provisioned hard disks through the web gui.

Can somebody please confirm or deny it?

Thank you

Below is the file list, I tired to consolidate and remove all snapshots but it failed and the snapshots disappeared/dimmed from the vShpere client so I restored it to its previous status before my consolidation attempt.

What to do now, knowing that removing snapshots/delete all and consolidation did not solve the problem before.

ESXi can't find the vmdk file after converting to a thin provision from thick.

$

Running ESXi 6.5 Update 2. (Dell version).

I was trying to convert the seven images from Thick provisions to thin provisions (my mistake not realizing what thick vs thin was at the time). After digging around online I found a suggestion that cloning the VMDK file will allow you to create the clone as a thin provision drive.

Below are the commands I used to do so just for reference.

-Cloning the original file. This created a cloned vmdk file along with a new *flat-vmdk file.

"vmkfstools -i VMname.vmdk -d thin thin-VMname.vmdk"

-Renamed the original VMDK files (the main and flat file) with a .old at the end.

"mv OldName.vmdk NewName.vmdk"

-Renamed the cloned vmdk files to match the original files.

"mv Cloned.vmdk Original.vmdk"

Unregister the image then Re Register it back in.

This worked perfectly fine for my first image. But when trying this with the second the esxi server can't find the vmdk file. Taking a look at the datastore I can see it's present but when trying to add a new drive and looking at the same path it's not shown.

Renaming everything back to the way it was resolves the issue.

Did something go wrong with the clone process or is something else going on?

The drives are setup to be single file and not multiple. I don't have any snapshots.

A Few Questions Regarding Esxi BIOS vs UEFI Boot.

$

Hello,

I am currently a Software Engineering student and I also maintain a small Windows network at my family's company. I am looking to build a white box server for home use, in order to better understand ESXi and Linux.

I have been studying Supermicro's webpage for quite some time now, and I have noticed that the overwhelming majority of their latest server boards (X11) are not certified for booting ESXi from UEFI. Almost all of their boards are certified for booting ESXi from BIOS, however.

My questions:

  1. Is UEFI ESXi booting important for a new (as in modern) server?
  2. Is it possible that their latest X11 motherboards which are only certified for ESXi BIOS boot could also be booted in UEFI without problems? I am thinking that Supermicro did not want to go through the trouble of certifying certain boards, based on their use case.
  3. Is it possible to boot a ESXi UEFI certified board into ESXi BIOS without problems?
  4. Are there any differences in device passthrough between ESXi BIOS boot and UEFI?

All of the above questions are assuming a new install of ESXi on the server.

As you can tell, I am a total noob to ESXi. I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Is it possible to prevent ESXi from shutting down if the power button on a server/workstation is pressed?

You can do this easily enough on a physical Windows box but cannot see this setting in vsphere/esxi.

Thanks.

VMware ESXi 6.5 Installation fails with Error

$

Dear Community,

Please bare with me, for I am new to hypervisor operation(s). As such, I may make simple mistakes along the way. I purchased a Dell Precision T7500 from a 3rd party recently, with the following specifications:

  • CPU :: (1x6crs.) Intel Xeon X5650
  • RAM :: (6x2GB) 12GB DDR3

NOTE :: 3 active memory channels

  • GPU :: (1x) nVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti

                   (1x) nVIDIA GeForce GT 520

  • SFX :: (1x) Creative 'SoundBlaster' Audigy 2
  • STR :: (1x) 4TB HDD

                  (1x) 500GB HDD

                  (1x) 320GB HDD

In addition to this, I should be receiving a CPU/RAM riser and a 2nd (identical) CPU in the mail in a few days/weeks. In that case, I'll have 2 of the same CPU in this workstation instead of one - and that will be the only thing changing. During the installation, I attempted to install ESXi to the 4TB HDD, to no avail. Here is a video of how my installation went:

ESXi Install Attempt :: Part I - YouTube

The final error that I arrive at is:

  • Unable to successfully execute 'tryFormatDevice' after 3 tries

I've searched across Google, and have only arrived at one possible solution:

Expand the LUN (size?) from 8GB to 16GB.

Possibly related topic: ESX 6.5 is unable to format a partition when installing on iSCSI.

But, how does one expand/extend LUN? Is it in BIOS? Is it something that must be performed in the installer? Please help.

Reducing the size of a vmdk file

A Windows VM hosted by a VMware ESXI 6.5 (member of a vSphere 6.5 infrastructure) has a VMDK disk whose size is 400 GB and whose format is thin.

The VMDK disk contains a partition whose size is 200 GB.

How can I reduce the size of the VMDK disk to, let's say, 300 GB?

Hello everyone

For my old IIS web server  SRV1:  Dell R730 .esxi 6.0 10k SAS drives  raid5  perc h730p mini  :  ( VM for web: 32 GB ram, 8vCPU Thick Eager Zeroed, LSI Logical Sas , E1000e network )

I purchased new server hardware  SRV2 :  Dell R740 ESXi 6.5 u3 with 2x ssd hard drives raid 1

and create for web server following VM  ( 256 GB ram,24 core vCPU  ( 2 sockets) 350 Gb Disk, Thick Eager Zeroed,  controller LSI Logical Sas , E1000e network )

but performance in SRV1 is more good than in a new server, the new server has more memory and more CPU

web loads faster in srv1's VM than the second server's VM

both are connected to the same DBA

any ideas what is the solution to increase performance?

or what will be best configuration recommendation for the IIS web server

p.s i am not GURU for VMware and need good advice

thanks a lot

updates are done for all

latest VMware tools installed as well
