ESXi 6.5 - how to access data from old installation datastore

$

I had to reinstall my ESXi6.5 host. To my surprise by default it sees only the datastore linked to the system disk.

I have an additional SATA disk in the system which was unaffected by this reinstallation. It is seen as a device in the new ESXi but it's not automatically mounted as a usable Datastore as far as I can tell. It seems like the GUI allows me to create a Datastore on this disk, but I don't want that, I just want to access the old data.

How do I do that considering this is a standalone host (no vSphere)?

Thanks!!

Hello!

I don't know when it started. Every week i get a purple screen of death and the system needs to be rebooted. It takes down the host as well as all of the vm's. I extracted a core dump file and was hoping someone could make some sense of it.

Googling around there doesn't seem to be anyone else reporting that same error:

Does anyone know what it might be?

Again USB passthrough issues

Hi all,

I'm running ESXi 6.7u2 on a Supermicro mini server.

I had no issue with older ESXi releases but with this one here I can't manage to see USB devices available for passthrough in the UI.

I've followed another discussion where a bug was fixed with 6.7u1 but still I can't manage to make USB devices seen by the VM.

I've tried adding a USB controller, 2.0 and/or 3.0 but still nothing.

through the CLI the device is seen (see below) but it doesn't appear available in the UI (it's all greyed out)

Any clue??

thanks!

I manage ESXi 6.5.0 Update 1 (Build 7967591) under free license.

I would like to upgrade it to 6.7 (because better macOS client support). There is no .zip file patch yet.

Hypervisor is in restricted network where all HTTP comunication must go through proxy 10.1.2.3:3128.

First I disable firewall to be able to connect to port 3128. I verify this by running nc -vz 10.1.2.3 3128.

When I run either of these commands:

esxcli software sources profile list --depot https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-d
epot-index.xml --proxy=http://10.1.2.3:3128
esxcli software sources profile list --depot https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-d
epot-index.xml --proxy=https://10.1.2.3:3128
esxcli software sources profile list --depot https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-d
epot-index.xml --proxy=10.1.2.3:3128

I get:

 [MetadataDownloadError]
Could not download from depot at https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml, skipping (('https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml', '', 'file not found'))        url = https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml
Please refer to the log file for more details.

I am able to use http_proxy enviroment varible to use `wget` to download files from the internet.

Is there something wrong with my command or is --proxy switch broken in 6.5.0?

Switches for ESXi iSCSI not on the LAN - is this a normal configuration?

Hello,

I have a Dell PowerEdge R610 connected to a Dell PowerVault MD3200i with two Dell PowerConnect 5524 switches in between them. The R610 and MD3200i are connected with iSCSI.

The Dell switches are not accessible from the rest of the LAN even though their IP addresses are in the same range as the rest of the LAN - so I can only log into the switches by bringing a PC into the server room and setting it up next to the switches. I'm guessing that some sort of block was implemented when the switches were installed (no one knows if that's the case or even who setup the switches in the first place).

My question is, is this the normal procedure for a setup like this? Is there a good reason not to have these switches accessible on the LAN?

Thanks in advance!

convert vmware vm to qemu vm

Hello VMware community. I have come to a problem  and ned your help.

I want to migrate a vm from vmware to kvm center. at the same time,  keep the vm business is still online , or the bussines can be down for  less than 3minuyes.

First of all, i should obtain a  vmdk file which contains  the full vm data, then convert it to  qcow2 file.

There are  the following steps:

    1. enable cbt,take a snapshot,

    2. call Vsphere web api   QueryChangedDiskAreasans , get (offset ,length) list result;

    3. with result from step 2 , get effective blocks from all allocated blocks from snap file, write these effective blocks to target  vmdk file ;

    4. take another snapshot, call QueryChangedDiskAreasans , and get (offset ,length) list result ,just get  effective blocks from xxxx-delta.vmdk,then write these effective  blocks to target file

repeat step 4  several times ,  when vm business is free then  convert target file to  qcow2 file.

my question is how to access  xxxx-delta.vmdk between two snapshots and  read effective blocks ?

what i want to do is get base data from step 2 and 3,  combine inc content from serveral steps just like step 4, then i can get all i need,so as not to miss anything

Please help me ,thank you all.

Cannot reach ESXi through LAN, but it's up and running just fine

No idea what happened, if I've done something or it just melted or what not.

I have this ESXi instance v 6.0.0 which I've set up years ago and is running fine (I've done a few updates from the web client but the last one was quite some time ago). I remember some weeks ago I tried running the update from UI but I can't remember why it was failing (the download I think; it was in the early stages as I would start it then operate on some VMs, so most likely the download).

All VMs power up when started as expected, they operate fine, they are accessible all is good.

I wanted to change something on a VM the other day and vsphere client failed to connect. Tried ssh, same. Http client, same. They all used to work. Again, LAN is operating fine. Ping replies.

nmap however shows no open ports.

I know for sure I didn't fiddle with the firewall on it.

esxcli network firewall ruleset allowedip list

shows ALL for every rule.

Obviously tried to reboot solution, no game.

Any ideas, clues what to check, what to try? Getting tired of managing the VMs from command line.

This is a single/standalone esxi 6.0 free install with a bunch of VMs, no fancy stuff. Well, there is vmdirectpath passthrough if it makes a difference.

Thanks

Esxi 6 startup with host - disabled

$

I've configured the startup/shutdown with the host for each VM. While I can configure settings for shutdown and order - for each machine - the startup is "disabled".

When I simulate a power-out (i.e, UPS reaches low battery) the host shutdown but the machines (VMs) are not being gracefully shutdown. It is just the host being shutdown.

My impression is that the "startup/shutdown with host" is somehow disabled?

The vmware tools are installed on each machine.

This is a small implementation and so not part of a cluster.

Any help on how to enable the shutdown with host would be appreciated.

DL380 G7 stuck loading at vmkibft loaded

Hi,

I have an old DL380 G7 on which I have run an SPP update from April this year, and runs Bios P67.

This model is listed on the HCL for old version like 5.0 and 5.5, including 6.0 plus updates.

I have installed on a USB key and am trying to boot (same happens for the installer), but the boot just gets stuck on "vmkibft loaded successfully"

Am at a loss on why this is getting stuck here, and looking for some guidance.

Have also tried ensuring the inbuilt raid controller has no default volumes set for boot.

Cheers

James

Multiple VLANs in virtual ESXi (VM)

$

Hello

I created lab with virtual ESXi installed on VM.

Now i want add second vmk adapter with another network.

What i need to do with VM or physical host for that?

Physical ESXi have multiple portgroups with vlan 1,2,3 with different networks and gateways.

I created new portgroup with VLAN 4095 and assign it to VM with ESX.

Settings vESX, vmk0:

vswitch0

vlan 1

mgmt ip 10.10.1.1

gw 10.10.1.254

Add new vmk1:

vswitch0

vlan 2

ip 10.10.2.1

gw 10.10.2.254

But i cant ping vmk1 from outside.

If i add vmk1 on physical ESXi host - everything works fine. Problem when submitting VLANs to a virtual machine.

10GB Network Cards not recognized by ESXi 6.0 host

I am installing ESXi 6.0 on 6 Dell PowerEdge R440's  They all have 2 default onboard 1GB nics installed as well as Broadcom 57412 Dual Port 10GB SFP+ PCIe Adapter and Broadcom 57416 Dual Port 10 GB E BaseT Network LOM Mezz Card.  Both are on the HCL for this version of ESXi.

After installing 6.0 on the hardware, I went in to configure the network and the only NICs I see are the onboard 1GB nics.  From vCenter all I can see are the 2 onboard nics.  I thought maybe it was a Driver issue  so I researched and found the vib file from VM to install the driver on my host.  When I run the esxcli software vib command, it returned that it skipped the vib for the driver.

I run lspci and I find all 6 nic's in the list.  I run esxcli network nic list, but only see the 2 onboard nics.  If I go into my vCenter, I can find the additional 4 cards when I go to the host\Manage\ Hardware\PCI Devices and Edit PCI Device Availability, but that enables passthrough so that the VM's can directly access the ports, but that is not what I want.  I want them in the vSwitch so all VM's use those ports instead of the 1GB ports.

Any suggestions\help would be greatly appreciated.

ESXi 6.7: can't login to WebUI

Brand new ESXi 6.7.0.update02-13006603 installation, no issues at installation time. Set password, configure management network (i use private address for ESXi host by security reason), test management network is Ok, all looks fine. Use IP address for access to WebUI https://ip.add.re.ss/ui/, get logo and User name/Password fields, use root as username and appropriate password (have no other users) and get error "Cannot complete login due to an incorrect user name or password." I can login to DCUI, and "Confiure Lockdown Mode" is grayed (see attach). If enable ESXi shell, i can login as root, but i can't login by ssh.
How to get access to WebUI?
