ESXi 6.7 - Cannot communicate with device when it's directly connected to host

$

Hi,

I have an APC AP9631 NMC that I want to use to shutdown an ESXi 6.7 host running on a Dell R440, using a vMA containing PowerChute Network Shutdown 4.2 (PCNS).

If I connect the NMC Ethernet port to one of R400 NICs (for instance, vmnic3), Powerchute cannot communicate with NMC. My other virtual machines also cannot ping NMC. If I connect NMC to my laptop, I can access it normally.

However, if I connect NMC to a physical switch and then connect this switch to one of R440 NICs (e.g. vmnic1), everything works fine: PCNS finds the NMC and the shutdown feature works as expected. When directly connected, both ports (host and at the device) have their orange LEDs solid lit, as opposed when connected to the physical switch that makes them blink as normal.

Do you know why no VM can ping the NMC when it's directly connected to the host and/or why PCNS cannot communicate with NMC? I believe the answer might be the same.

Some information:

ESXi IP address: 10.0.240.201, manually set.

NMC IP address: 10.0.240.205, manually set.

R440 has 4 NICs, all of them on the same vSwitch, which is also connected to the VM Management network.

The physical switch that do the trick is a Rockwell Stratix 5700 (equivalent to Cisco IE 2000), running Cisco IOS.

UPS is a SRC2000XLI.

ESXi host is licensed (Essentials kit).

Management network and "Plant network" is on the same switch (vSwitch0), that has vmnic0 to vmnic3.

There is a also "vSwitchInternal" with no vmnic attached that I use to network one VM to another (subnet 172.31.0.x).

I have two virtual machines running Windows Server 2012R2 and one running Windows 7 besides PCNS VM.

Please find below two pictures of networking configuration (sorry for the quality):

Andre

ESXi 6.7 Performance graphs only show the last few minutes

This is my second install of ESXi 6.7 U1 and I'm seeing the same problem. The performance monitoring graph on the host and on individual VMs only shows the last few minutes, no matter how long it has been up. This is the case with all counters (CPU/Network/Memory/Disk). Screenshots attached. Running the free license. I have tried restarting hostd, running with/without NTP, and, obviously, a full re-install. Any suggestions?

Esx behavior if his lost his boot lun

Hello all,

I would like to know the behavior of an ESX if we cut his boot lun after the ESX booting. Does the ESX need his boot lun to read or write file on this lun ?

What his the VM behavior ? Does the VM still running normaly but whitout any modification allow or does the VM will be freeze or hang up ?

Our context his that we have one customer who need to reboot his Netapp on which we have our Boot Lun. We are looking for the potential impact of this Netapp reboot for our ESX and VM.

For information Vcenter is 6.0 version and ESXi also.

I thought that when the ESX have finish to boot, he doesn't use his boot lun anymore so the VM will be running as usely but without the possibility to modify them right ?

Guest OS Compatibility for ESXi 5.0.

What Guest OS are compatible for ESXi 5.0.  The compatibility matrix  no longer list this version. I basically need to know what the first version that supports Windows 2012 R2 is. I tried calling support but they didn't know and said they were not trained on this. I get the product is no longer supported but to remove from the website when all links go back to the compatibility guide is ridiculous.

Converting Thick Provisioned Disk to Thin on ESXi Server....

$

Hi all,

I hope this is an easy one for you folks.  I have a VM on an ESXi server and I'm trying to convert it to Thin provisioning.  I followed the information in this link, and it pretty much gets me where I need to be...

https://theitbros.com/convert-thick-provision-lazy-zeroed-disk-to-thin-vmware-esxi/

I get to the following where things fall apart!...

"Now connect to the host server using the VMWare ESXi web interface.  Select the desired VM and Edit Settings and delete old disk (Select Remove from virtual machine or datastore). After that add new disk : Add -> Hard Disk -> Use an existing virtual disk -> select file w10rtm-test.vmdk on your datastore->Save."

I'm using the ESXi web interface so things are a bit different.  But when I go into the VM settings, to delete the HD, I select remove from datastore.  Then I add the new HD and point to the newly converted file.  I think files were then deleted as when I tried to start the VM, there was no OS detected.

I did this successfully on my first attempt, but I don't think I quite followed the directions, but it worked.

Basically with this latest VM, its toast and I'm starting.   This time I converted from Tick to Thin on my VMWare workstation machine and I have yet to upload that to the ESXi server to see if it actually worked.  I'm doing some other cleanup on the Guest beforehand.

However I do have another VM I would like to switch to Thin and I have not started any of the process yet.  I will copy the VM to another datastore as a backup before I start anything this time.

Anyway, is the information provided in the link accurate?  I just wonder, after I have created the converted disk and rename as directed why things go south when I actually try to remove old/add new in the ESXi interface.

Any help appreciated!!

ESXi management daemons crash after replacing SSL certificate

$

I've installed an ESXi evaluation and stumbled upon a bug. Reported it to @vmwarecares on Twitter and they've told me to report it here. This isn't a question, but merely a bug report to the development department. I couldn't submit this through the support page, as evaluations aren't listed (it requires to select a product, but there are none for that reason).

Product: VMware ESXi Version: 6.5.0 (Build 5224529) - Image profile: ESXi-6.5.0-4564106-standard (VMware, Inc.)

Category: BUG

Behaviour: When an invalid SSL certificate is uploaded through the vSphere web client, it's refused but applied nevertheless, crashing any and all of the management daemons.

Expected behaviour: When an invalid SSL certificate is uploaded through the vSphere web client, vSphere web client throws an error.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Login to the vSphere web client (https://{$IP}).
  2. Navigate to Host -> Manage -> Security & Users -> Certificates.
  3. Click 'Import new certificate'.
  4. Import any, single PEM encoded certificate.
  5. vSphere will throw an error, rejecting the certificate.
  6. Wait a few minutes.
  7. Refresh the web client (hard refresh!), it will refuse the connection.
  8. Login to the SSH daemon, most management actions will be impossible (eg, vim-cmd, esxcli, will throw an refused connection error).

Steps to diagnose:

  1. The VPXA log (/var/log/vpxa.log) contains this line:
[Originator@6876 sub=Default] Failed to initialize the SSL context: N7Vmacore3Ssl12SSLExceptionE(SSL Exception: error:0B080074:x509 certificate routines:X509_check_private_key:key values mismatch) --> Panic: Failed to initialize the SSL context.

Steps to fix:

  1. Execute: /sbin/generate-certificates
  2. Restart the management daemons: services.sh restart

Check status of vmkfstools process?

I used vmkfstools to clone a virtual disk via an SSH connection to one of our ESXi servers. I unfortunately lost my network sometime thereafter but before it completed. Is there a way I can check the completion status and/or whether it completed successfully? According to the vmkfstools documentation, there doesnt appear to be a way to do so with that command specifically.

Thanks!

Two identical USB harddisks - only the first gets detected

I am trying to attach two identical USB harddisks to ESXi 6.7 and followed the following guide to get the first disk working:

https://www.virten.net/2015/10/usb-devices-as-vmfs-datastore-in-vsphere-esxi-6-0/

This worked fine, but as soon as I plug in the second disk i noticed that no addition disk appears in /dev/disks.

If i unplug the first disk and plug in the second it appears under the same name in /dev/disks.

"esxcli storage core adapter list" shows the following...

My guess is that due to the same device/vendor id, the disks are not appearing separately.

Is there anyone here who has an idea how i could solve this? Thanks!

Can vSGA work in ESXI same way as in VMWare Player.

$

Hello.

I just tested vSGA in my VMWare player. Most of people says it is just software virtualization and it uses only CPU, but in my case it is actually not, task manager on host shows, that GPU takes a big involvement in computation, which is nice, Dx11 apps runs smooth enough for me.

What I want - is to skip Windows host and move to ESXI.

So the question is, will ESXI use my GPU (gtx 1060) for vSGA too? Do i need to install drivers or something? Or is it possible only on Windows host under VMWare Player/Workstation?

Don't need vGPU or passthrough, I'm fine with software virtualisation, I just want my GPU to be involved like it works in Player.

Thanks.

vDS health check showing "Non-IP Hash Mismatch"

$

I have two 10 gig connections into a Virtual Distributed switch. We are using this for iSCSI, vMotion, and VM traffic. The Juniper switch ports that provide connectivity are configured as trunks ports, no LACP or aggregation.

  • We use iSCSI port binding and both VMkernel ports are configured as "Route based on originating virtual port"
  • We use multi-nic vMotion and both VMkernel ports are configured as "Route based on originating virtual port"
  • Our VM portgroup is configured with "Route based on physical NIC load"

Everything has been working fine for the past 6 months when we put these new HPE servers in. We decided to enable Virtual Distributed Switch Health check and it came up with several problems including Non-IP Hash Mismatch under teaming and failover. This is either a mis-configuration on our part or the vDS health check is buggy and not reliable. We are running ESXi 6.7 update 1. What are you seeing in your vDS health check?

My computer is Intel NUC5PPYH, the processor is a 14nm Pentium n3700.

Hardware: Intel® NUC Kit NUC5PPYH Specifications

According to the official website of the information, VT-x/VT-d are supported.

but i install ESXi, stop on "Relocating modules and starting up the kernel"

I tried many methods:

1, Change different ESXi versions 5.1,5.5,6.0.

2,Upgrade BIOS, set the BIOS boot mode, set the video card memory size.

3, Press Shift + O before installation and enter ignoreHeadless = TRUE.

4, Usb disk ISO, PXE boot ISO.

The above methods fail

vsphere 6.7 LSI raid card, can't get drive status

Hi!

I have this server setup at home:

SuperMicro X10SLL-F

Intel Xeon E3-1241 v3

32GB 3CC 1600

LSI 8708EM2

2x Velociraptor 10k 300gb RAID 1

4x WD Red 2TB Raid 5

I was running Vsphere 6.0 since a long time, and I decided to go over 6.7. Installation worked fine, I have access to everything, all is working... Except 2 things:

1. I can't get my LSI 8708EM2 (detected as a 1078) to show drive status

2. Can't get my Storage Manager to access disk info or rebuild raid.

When I was on vSphere 6.0, I was able to see my drive status (and veeam one could alert me), and with my WIndows VM, I had LSI MSM and I was able to configure the raid card.

So what I did:

Install SAS driver I was using in version 6 --> not working

Installed the SMIS I had  --> not working

Installed lastest SMIS  --> not working

Disabled the Firewall --> not working

I have no idea what else I can do. I know it's an old card, but I got it for cheap. Any idea how can I get this fixed?

Thanks

ESXi 6.5 Update 2 mehrere Netzwerkadapter verwenden

$

Hallo Zusammen

Kaya

ESXi 6.7 U1 export function not completing

$

Hello all, I am new to the VMWare forums. We have a ESXi 6.7 Update 1 installation with a vm host (CentOS Linux 7) originally provisioned as a thick disk (120GB) installation during automated build process.  Successfully used the VMFStools to change the virtual disk to be thin provisioned (24 GB), vm is configuired to use EFI to boot.  We are trying to export the Linux vm so that it can be hosted on another ESXi 6.7 U1 host.

  • The export to OVF process resulted in two files being created in the download folder (vmhost.xml(?) and vmhost.vmdk).
  • In the esxi host task panel, the export to template process never completes and terminates properly even though the two files appear to be created successfully.
  • During a verification process (recreate a vm by using the newly exported files) a new vm host is established on the esxi.
  • Upon start up the vm is unable to locate the virtual disk.  cannot locate grub.efi

Anyone seen this before?  Is there a way to recreate the corrupt file?

ESXi 6.7 - Guest VM's hang during graceful shutdown or reboot

$

I'm running ESXi 6.7 on a dell server, with some Windows 10 guest VM's. I'm managing VM's through the ESXi web interface. VMware guest tools are installed.

Whenever I shut down or restart VM's through the ESXi interface or directly in the VM (via RDP), they get stuck and won't fully turn off. I can still open the console and see the "restarting" screen, but it just gets stuck there indefinitely. The white twirling icon stops moving. This is what I see:

I need to hit Power Off to get it to fully shut down and into a state where I can start it back up again. Reboots / shutdowns initiated from inside the VM result in the same behavior, so if someone reboots from an RDP session in the VM, it will never come back online until you shut it down manually in the ESXi console.

Any help would be appreciated, I don't really know how to troubleshoot this. The only thing I can see under "recent tasks" is all the power off / reboot guest instances say "completed successfully".

*Edit*: I just discovered that this only starts happening AFTER I've installed VMware guest tools. If I uninstall the tools, the shutdown / reboot (initiated from inside the VM) work properly. I'm still lost...
