ESXi 5.5 & Mellanox IB Dual Port Card card showing just a sinlge vmnic

Hi guys

I just got two Mellanox cards from eBay to use those as 10GbE adapters.

However there are two things I don't get.

1. One card shows up as expected with two ports / vmnics. OK the namig of one vmnic is a bit off but at least it's working. Also the card shows some regular MAC addresses.

2. The other card pops up with just a single vmnic and a weird MAC (this is probably normal in the IB world?)

However I would like to find out why one card only shows up with a single port, any ideas? I have seen some similar screenshots floating around but no fix.

Some tips would be really appreciated!

vCenter 6.5 - vCenter Appliance stops working

Hi, this issue started 2 days ago when I attempted to update from to "VC-6.5.0U2b-Appliance-FP" (6.5.0.21000 Build Number 8815520) in the vSphere Appliance Management. It stopped at 60% and prompted with an error code about "not being able to contact the server...". I then restarted the Appliance and from there it went down hill.

I figured out if I ran the command "Service vami-lighttp start" and  it came up again, but after some time I couldn't authenticate etc.. seems as some services aren't running.

I did find this discussion in a different thread and noticed it was the exact same issue I have -> vCenter 6.5 - vcenter appliance stops working out of the blue, AGAIN!!

I will post the same output and hopefully figure this out. (I did notice those 4 commands, but haven't used those yet since I don't quite understand what they do)

ESXi issues after vCenter Server upgrade - cannot SSH and console appears different

$

We recently upgraded to vCenter Server 6.0.0 Update 2 in an effort to upgrade our environment to 6.x+ from 5.1.0.  After the vCenter upgrade completed fairly smoothly, I noticed one of the 2 hosts we have in the cluster had an alert - "vSphere HA agent is unreachable".  There is only one VM currently running on this host and I tried to migrate it to the other host so I could reboot the ESXi host to see if it would fix the issue but got a "general system error" and it failed.  I also tried the "Reconfigure for HA" option when you right-click the host in the vSphere Client.  In trying to further troubleshoot (check logs, etc.), I turned on SSH and the ESXi Shell but I could not SSH to the host... and when I connect via iLO to view the console of the ESXi host, it does not show the normal Black/yellow VMware ESXI standby screen, only a black screen that has at the top of the screen 'ESXi 5.1.0' (in yellow text) and the VMware URL (in blue text) with the copyright info on the next line.  After a while and hitting keys to wake it, it prompted me to login, but I'm not sure what I'm logging into or how to proceed further, or if a restart is necessary (or whether or not it can be rebooted via the client).

How can I fix this so I can move forward with upgrading the hosts to match vCenter?  The other host seems to be normal and encountered no issues like this.

ESXi

Dear ladies and gentlemen,

in March 2017 we bought an ESXi Licence and thought we will have support with it. So we extented the "support" in 2018 for another 3 years. But as we know now, the "Subscription only" plan is only for updates, not for support. Damn ...

That's why I'm opening this thread. We are running 2 ESXi Hosts, both with Raid 5. I know, Raid 5 is not well known for it's speed, but yeah, read the next few lines.

We get a speed of about 20MB/s when copy files from one of our hosts or even at this host between datastores. Running on a ThinkSystem SR650. The ESXi is connected with fibre channel to one of our switches, no problem with other hosts. Like i said, even when I connect with SSH to the ESXi and try to duplicate an VMDK on file level, it's very slow. Can't measure the exact speed, but it's slow, trust me. The other host is faster, downloading a VMDK of it gives us a speed of about 100M/sec.

Is there any way to export something like a debug profile for you guys here on the forums? I think that would be helpful. We are running very critical tasks on this ESXi, so a reboot is not an option at the moment. We need to replicate our VMs to the 2nd Host before we can do this. But maybe there are some steps without reboot which we can try.

Thanks for any advice!

Evaluating this product on refurbed dual 2670v1 box..

Install one test VM, ubuntu, fine.

Install another, get this error msg : "The VM configuration was rejected. Please see browser Console"

- Ok that was fast. (no the folder is not present).

Try to manually create a folder on datastore. Nothing happens.

Now I try and power off the first VM, hard "Power off" ... nothing. Reset ... nothing. Log on to VM manually and shutdown Ubuntu manually that works.

First experience running this product do not inspire confidence!

High CPU on ESXi host, with NO VM's running

$

I have a consistent 25-35% cpu usage on my host with no VM's powered on. Single host ESXi 6.5. I updated to update 1 still had issue, then update 2 and still happening. If I reboot host it will run perfect for a few hours. VM's run fine and CPU usage is all good inside them. Regardless if I power my two VM's on or even leave them off... cpu will spike to around 30% in 2 to 4 hours and stay that way. It is using 6 to 8 Ghz consistently with no VM's on until I reboot...

In the monitor I see Package 0 and Package 1 are averaging 50% cpu usage where it is 0% on those two for the first few hours where CPU is normal.  No events or notifications in the web gui.

Also did all firmware updates on my server as well. Might just have to load 5.5 back on, server ran fine with that version. VMware compatibility list says 6.5 for my cpu but only 5.5 for my server, IBM x3650 M3. Might try 6.7 just to see what happens, this server not in production yet. =)

Any ideas?

vSphere6.7 NFS datastore mkdir fail with "File exists" after delete VM from disk and recreate VM in same datastore with same name

$

Some of my 6.7 ESXi hosts got into this situation frequently after I run some automated tests. I have a few VMs in a NFS datastore, I powered all of them off, delete them from disk, go the ESXi console, checked the VM folder are gone, but if I try to create new VM with same name in same datastore, it complains "File exists", same problem if I run mkdir directly.

[root@houh10-0745:~] cd /vmfs/volumes/ds1

[root@houh10-0745:/vmfs/volumes/e1974343-ed7fe9e2] ls

[root@houh10-0745:/vmfs/volumes/e1974343-ed7fe9e2] mkdir win2k8_dtw_01rg_200_ATF_1

mkdir: can't create directory 'win2k8_dtw_01rg_200_ATF_1': File exists

I have not figure out how to get the ESXi into this state, other than run the long automated test so far.

When the ESXi is in this state, I tried restart vCenter, restart the services running on the ESXi host, or restart the NFS storage server for the datastore, neither will fix this problem. We checked from the NFS storage server side, there appear to be no mkdir command come in to the NFS server.

What is strange is, if I run mkdir with a new VM name, it will succeeded, and after that, I will be able to create the VM or mkdir with the VM name which was failing before.

Wonder if anyone have experience similar problem in 6.7, we have not seen this in 6.5 setups. Thanks.

Threadripper ESXi 6.7 GPU and USB passthrough, experience progress and problems

$

Hello all-- thought I'd pass through (pun intended!) my experience so far getting up a multiheaded ESXi box on an AMD Threadripper platform.

Hardware:

ASRock Professional Gaming X399 motherboard

AMD Threadripper 1950x

64GB DDR4 RAM

1TB nvme m.2 drive

NVidia 1080 FE

Software:

ESXi 6.7

Windows 10 64 bit client

Steps that have worked so far:

I can get a vm with GPU passthrough working. In order to do this, I had to:

Upgrade the BIOS to the beta version (AGESA update)-- otherwise VM won't power up.

The mystical hypervisor.cpuid in the vm configuration, to avoid error 43 in the NVIDIA drivers in windows.

Edit passthru.map (I'm using d3d0, not bridge; others have used link).(On my former build not doing this yields complete host hang when restarting a VM.)

Turned on all IOMMU options, ACP , SVM in BIOS.

VM must use BIOS, otherwise hangs at Windows loading if USB passthrough is enabled.

The board has 3 USB controllers that I can see.  Each appears associated with two other devices, a "nonessential device" and a platform security processor in addition to the controller itself.

I can't get the aquantia 10GB ethernet to pass through, not that I've tried very hard.  It seems to get stuck at "enabled but needs to reboot" despite infinite reboots.

Current problem:

I can pass through a USB controller and it works fine.  If I then shut down or reboot the VM, it hangs on windows logo when starting again.  From a cold boot, no problems.

Things that haven't worked:

Changing PCIE switch mode in BIOS  to Gen 2 instead of Auto.

Idea: Perhaps the USB controllers on this board  (AMD Family 17H USB 3.0 controller?) also need to use d3d0 rebooting? Seems strange, but the bug is reminiscent of what the consumer NVIDIA boards do when not switched to bridge mode.

Hope my experience has been helpful to others and any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks "LT"

Hi,

I am unable to mount or add existing NFS share folder with new ESXi Server, getting below error;

Drobo 5C DAS usb 3.0 on ESXi 6.7

A Drobo 5C DAS connected to a Lenovo M710q host on ESXi 6.7 will only show up as bcdUSB 2.10 high speed rather than 3.0 superspeed.  ntfs throughput for the Drobo added as a device in a Server 2012 vm via usb 3.0 controller in the vm settings reaches only ~40MB/s.   Reverting to xhci in place of the newer vmkusb using https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2147650 has been tried and  module status was verified to confirm it did change to xhci but it still stayed at 2.10 with no change other than xhci throughput being somewhat slower than vmkusb.  A sandisk usb 3.0 memory stick plugged into another M710q on ESXi 6.7 does populate as usb 3.0.   An older model Drobo 5D connected to a Lenovo M73 host running ESXi 6.0 populates at usb 3.0 and reaches ~250MB/s ntfs throughput when added as a usb device in a Server 2012 vm via xhci controller in the vm settings.   Not a 1:1 comparison but it's the closest matching setup I have access to right now.  Key lines in the output below are the bcdUSB entries under the Data Robotics sections.  Any suggestions to get 3.0 out of this setup are appreciated.

Cannot provision machines for linked clones

I have Horizon 7.6, vcenter 6.7, ESXi (single host) 6.7, Nimble Storage array connected to my host. I cannot provision linked clones, process fails at exactly same point each time. I do have opened case with vmware but support does not seem to have an answer to my problem. My horizon shows following error:

View Composer Fault: ExceptionTruncatedFault

Looking at logs on ESXi host, i can see that there is issue reading vmdk for my replica vm that gets created:

OBJLIB-FILEBE : FileBEOpen: can't open '/vmfs/volumes/5bb5e761-166cfddc-6ed3-000af7b87a1c/replica-2d98247e-311d-4e73-ab0d-1800b4f47a56/replica-2d98247e-311d-4e73-ab0d-1800b4f47a56.vmdk' : Could not find the file (393218)

And I am not sure why does this happen when account connected to vsphere is administrator (full rights), vcenter is connected to ESXi host using root account. Full log is below. Any ideas?

Folks, I have some VMware machines and I need to make backups of them outside the host, the version used is for free ... I know that this version has some limitations ... does anyone know of any solution for me to do this? Thank you

vMotion of 1 specific VM is stuck at 72 %

Hello,

i can do a vmotion of all my vms except one (an Microsoft exchange 2010-vm)

Migration of this vm was no problem in esxi 5.5, but is no stuck at 72% (see screenshot).

I can only break this migration by restarting the vcenter-services.

Why is the problem happening and what is the problem?

Thx
