Hello,

I'm trying to install updates from a zip file but always gives the same error. "No Space Left On Device"

But there is a plenty of space on Device.

When i try to run

esxcli software vib update -d /vmfs/volumes/datastore1/ESXi600-201703001.zip

it gives that error:

Please refer to the log file for more details.

How to migrate virtual machine from one host to another host by vmware ESXI?

Hi

I have VMware ESXI version 1.8.0

I wish to migrate one virtual machine from one host to another host by vmware ESXI (web).

I don't have vmMotion with option Migrate.

What I investigated is that I can download the vmdk file.

I'm not sure the migration can be done by using drag and drop to virtual machine.

Is there an url where explains how to do that?

Migrating to LAG (LACP) Setup with unRAID VM

$

I'm a bit of a networking novice when in comes to ESXi...

I'm currently on ESXi 6.5 (free) and I am running unRAID as a NAS on a single physical adapter. This unRAID VM has two Virtual NICs: one for untagged traffic and another Virtual NIC on a VLAN. Everything works fine.

I will soon have another adapter (making 2 in total) and I'd like to use in a LAG configuration. My question, how would one proceed to do this and would I still be able to maintain my currently setup with this?

In other words (not sure if the terminology is right here), I'd create a LAG with two physical NICs and then a vSwitch and use it no differently than a single adapter?

Also, I notice that the free version does static lag and not lacp. I'm not quite sure I totally understand the difference of the two? LACP is really for failover, right? But both do increase bandwidth?

Another question, if I get the paid license and install vCenter, I could manage LACP via that?

Thanks for you help/

Restrict Multi-CPU

What I'm attempting to do is emulate a Quad-Core CPU @ 1.1GHz.    So I want to have all 4 CPUs and make sure that at no point do any of the 4 cores exceeds 1.1GHz of speed.   I tried setting it to the 4CPUs and 4400Mhz of CPU Limit.   But at one point in my testing I was only using one thread and it was allowed to go past that 1.1GHz of speed, which invalidated my test.

Is this something that is possible, and if so, what would the settings be in ESXi 6.5?

Thanks

Hi All,

I have recently downloaded esxi 6.5 but i cannot install it because it does not detect any of my network adapters. In my personal lab I have many low end amd and intel desktops.

Can someone suggest me work around or any low end intel network adapter that i can buy for the purpose of getting my hands on vmware.

I am new to vmware, please advise.

vSphere web client - how to identify licensed CPUs? Those show up in the fat client?

Hi everyone,

While using the vSphere web client (esxi.x.x/ui) I noticed that I can't see some info which I could with the old binary client -- how can one identify licensed CPUs in the web client?

Those show up in the fat client just fine under licensing but in the web client the licensing section is missing that information?

Screen shots below - same ESXi host seen from the 2 clients:

vsphere 6.5 web console - typematic rate AND copy/paste not working

$

As stated - the web console does not allow copy/paste (event plain text) into the VM console.

I am having the issue in differnt guest OS versions - 2008, 2008r2, 2106.

All have the latest vm tools installed.

I've also set isolation.tools.copy/paste.disable to false (with VM powered off).

As for the key duplication - I am constantly getting duplicated characters.

It's so bad, I have to type passwords in Notepad to make sure it registers what I type,

then copy/paste in the password prompts (learned that the hard way when

a duplicate character was introduced in a password...)

Yes - I've read all the posts on both of these issues.

I've set the typematic delay as directed.  I've even rebooted the host.

Any thoughts when the normal means aren't working?

Thanks in advance!

vSphere ESXi 6.5.0 Hardware Sensors

Hello Everyone,

I have a Q170 based motherboard and have successfully loaded ESXi 6.5.0. However, ESXi does not display any Hardware Sensor Data and reports "No Sensor Data Available".

Does ESXi require BMC or IMPI to obtain hardware database? Does it not get at least basic sensor information from the CPU sensors, etc.?

Thanks

Hi,

A quick question regarding the charts and graphs etc in vcenter, I have a VM running on a NFS datastore on a host just for some testing so I can see what its like, surprisingly its actually quite good.

but when you look at the task manager inside the VM and then look at the charts on VCenter they are different i've added a screenshot to see how come they are different?

my public ips are 54.44.55.33    but gateway is still 158.54.40.20

i added it with this settings its not working! noting that itried adding it as vmkernel nic and it works with i try to access with that ip

Dealing with a disk loss

$

Hello community members.

I'm new to VMWare, and evaluate the free ESXi to proof my concept of moving to VMWare Essentials.

My server has eight SATA disks, each configured as a singular datastore. I create a guest OS (in my case, Solaris) and assign two virtual disks, each on a different datastore, thus, different physical disk.

Next, I mirror the disks using Solaris Volume Manager. Now I run disk I/O and can clearly see both disks are busy.

Now I'd simulate a fatal disk error by removing a disk, assuming the volume manager will take care of it. To my surprise, VMWare halts the VM. For further surprise, ESXi restarted the VM after exactly four minutes, which is great for me.

In the VM log, I see the following lines:

2018-02-07T16:33:29.439Z| vmx| I125: Msg_Question:

2018-02-07T16:33:29.439Z| vmx| I125: [msg.hbacommon.askonpermanentdeviceloss] The storage backing for virtual disk '/vmfs/volumes/5638ff99-591db485-df48-00259032e410/s10/s10_1.vmdk' has been permanently lost. You may be able to hot remove this virtual device from the virtual machine and continue after clicking _Retry. Click Cancel to terminate this session.

2018-02-07T16:37:29.705Z| vmx| I125: Timing out dialog 25919

2018-02-07T16:37:29.705Z| vmx| I125: MsgQuestion: msg.hbacommon.askonpermanentdeviceloss reply=0

Question 1: How can I influence the time the VM becomes suspended, or, to be more preceise, the timeout of this dialog?

I also prepare on read/write errors without having a completely failed disk. For that reason,

Question 2: can I assume a read/write error on a datastore is forwarded to the VM?

Thank you very much.

consuming vim-cmd output

vim-cmd hostsvc/net/vswitch_info

for example returns very readable data, for example starting like:

(vim.host.VirtualSwitch) [

      name = "vSwitch0",

      key = "key-vim.host.VirtualSwitch-vSwitch0",

      numPorts = 5632,

      numPortsAvailable = 5621,

      mtu = 1500,

      portgroup = (vim.host.PortGroup) [

         <vim.host.PortGroup:key-vim.host.PortGroup-VM Network>,

         <vim.host.PortGroup:key-vim.host.PortGroup-VMkernel24>,

         <vim.host.PortGroup:key-vim.host.PortGroup-Management Network>

      ],

      pnic = (vim.host.PhysicalNic) [

         <vim.host.PhysicalNic:key-vim.host.PhysicalNic-vmnic0>

      ],

I am working on automation that needs to consume and use these values.

What format is being presented? And how do I use it, short of writing my own parsing algorithm?

It does not seem to be python or json.

Windows Server 2012 R2 Treating VMDKs as External Media in vSphere 5.1 U3

$

I have a few Server 2012 Standard R2 VMs, one happens to be a SQL Server with a total of 4 VMDKs, C:X:Y:Z volumes in the OS. My DBA called me to say all but the C: drive was giving her Access Denied after about a month of being in service. I logged on as Local Admin/Domain Admin and I got the same thing. I could not even access the security of the volumes. Logged on as Local Admin I could, and everything looked fine. I could UNC to these volumes admin shares with no issue. After some research I find that since server 2012, it has treated VMDKs as external storage. There was an issue with Hyper-V also, but Microsoft fixed those. If you go to your task bar and use your external media tool, you will see your drives there as external media to eject if possible.

In 2012 R2 there is a new security policy, that was not configured, but it seems to have acted anyway.. For removable media after so much I/O it locks the drives. There were a few work arounds for this, including disabling the audit policy, which again was not configured. And then this Vmware KB about adding a line to the VM advanced options to disable Plug-N-Play hot swap.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1012225

Neither fix worked in unlocking the locked drives.

I wound up as local admin adding authenticated users to the security permissions and that unlocked them for logged in and system account uesrs after that. But I don't know if this will lock up again for that fix after so much I/O again.

I have opened a ticket with Microsoft, and so far applied all the patches/hot fixes they advised, and then they suggested changing the SAS Controller from LSI to Parallel which borked the server by locking the C: drive and not allowing windows to boot or autorepair.

These are the Microsoft updates I have applied that they asked with no luck.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2883200

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2928680

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/20885.hyper-v-update-list-for-windows-server-2012-r2.aspx

Anyone else having this issue? I think this is a huge problem that windows server 2012 & R2 is seeing  vmdks as external media attached. Especially with these type of audit policies being added in.

And maybe I hit it sooner since I have a SQL server with databases running on these drives.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here is another link describing the issue at hand, although this is more of a share issue, but related.

Is there another way to see what programs are modifying the blocks on my Virtual Disks?

Hello there!

I want to create a datastore on an external 500GB USB hard drive with the following guide: USB Devices as VMFS Datastore in vSphere ESXi 6.0 | Virten.net

It all worked fine until step nine where I have to create the vmfs partition. Instead of vmfs5 I used vmfs6 (but due to the error i tried 5 as well - didn't worked), but when I run the command I get the following message with an error:

I was googling for a solution but I didn't found anything that worked for me.

Some (maybe useful) information:

When I log in onto the ESXi web client, I'm seeing the device with a VMFS partition with the device's size but I cannot create a datastore from it.

Tried to install ESXi on Asrock Q1900B-ITX

Hi Everyone out there, and thanks in advance for the comments & assistance.

I'm trying to setup my home lab by installing ESXi 6.5 (standard iso, generated with the script) on an Asrock Q1900B-ITX mobo.

Having googled & read all the info I could compile about the topic,  it looks like user "Martin" on the forum succeeded making it work via a riser card + external VGA plugged in the mobo.

I tried to replicate the scheme, but no luck at all. Still hanging on the same step. I enclose pics

Anyone willing to help? Saddest thing is, there is not even a f**king logger to debug the issue... or at least, I was not able to find it...

Thanks in advance!!!

connecting local CD/DVD drive hangs

$

Hi!

I have seen this problem several times in the last days: When trying to connect my local DVD drive through vSphere Client with a VM, the CD/DVD button shows "connecting..." but never actually finalizes the process. I think yesterday I was able to solve this problem only by powering off the VM, removing the device from the configuration and adding a new one. Now even if I remove the device, power on the VM (i.e. the CD/DVD button is greyed out because there is no device), power off the VM and add a new drive, then power it on again, the drive is still shown as "connecting..."

Is this a known problem? And how do I get out of this situation?

Windows Server 2012 R2 BSOD 0x0000013c

Hello,

One of my Windows 2012 R2 RDS servers crashes with a BSOD INVALID_IO_BOOST_STATE (code: 0x0000013c). Some searching told me that it should be a driver with a memory leak.

Guest: Windows Server 2012 R2 up to date, hardware version 11, LSI Logic Storage Controller, E1000E NIC, Host: Dell PowerEdge R720, ESXi 6.0.0

This is the only server with this issue but this is our sole RDS server in our VMWare environment. Do you have any suggestions how to fix?

When I run the analysis on the minidump, it says the issue is with msoia.exe which is the Microsoft Office Telemetry Agent but when I submitted a Microsoft Office 365 ticket, they referred me to Windows Server (commercial) support. They referred me back to Microsoft Office 365. I've attached my minidump. Should I post my full dump? It's more than a gigabyte in size so I'm holding off unless it's really neaded.

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
