Clone a Windows Server 2012 Virtual Machine that is using VMXNET3 and is joined to a domain to another site with different subnet and update it's IP address. Copy an executable file (file with .exe extension) to another Windows Server and the Windows VM will crash immediately with this error: BAD_POOL_CALLER.
However, it works fine if you copy documents file. Copying any executable files to linux-base network drive works fine too. Copy in the opposite direction from any network drive (both linux and windows base) into this server works fine as well. The issue does not occur if the server is boot into safe mode or join workgroup instead of domain.
vmtools is 10287 (10.1.15). vmxnet3 is 1.7.3.2. I upgraded vmtools to the latest 10.3.2 with vmxnet3 at 1.8.3.1 and still face the same issue.
Resolution: replace VMXNET3 with E1000E vNIC.
