Memory Reservations and Disk I/O

I am evaluating these settings from VMware KB:    Troubleshooting hosted disk I/O performance problems.

  1. MemTrimRate = "0"
  2. mainMem.useNamedFile = "FALSE"
  3. sched.mem.pshare.enable = "FALSE"
  4. prefvmx.useRecommendedLockedMemSize = "TRUE"
  5. mainmem.backing = "swap"

I'm running ESXi v4.1.  My hosts have lots of memory but slow disks.  I recently set the memory reservations for each virtual machine to the max so there wouldn't be any swap files created on disk.  I'm now wondering if doing that eliminates the needs for any of the above settings.

  1. I understand this affects when guest memory is returned to the host.  Does this happen if the guest has a reservation defined?
  2. I believe this is only for Windows hosts.  I'm using ESXi so I'm guessing it is irrelevant.
  3. This should disable page sharing between guests.  Since I've got a memory reservation in place I'm guessing this wouldn't matter either.  Even if it was still in use none of those page sharing should be going to disk, right?
  4. I believe this is related to memory swap files which my reservations should eliminate the need for.
  5. This appears to be for linux hosts but I don't think ESXi gets counted here either.

Can anyone shed some light on exactly what these settings do and if I've already eliminated the need for them by giving full memory reservations to all my guests?
