Slow file transfers to ESXi raid

Hi all

Im new here so was wondering if anybody could lend me some advice with an issue I’m currently having with slow file transfer speeds to my raid drives on my ESXi host. I have an LSI 9211-8i raid card and I have setup a simple raid 0 for my 2 WD red disks to give me 6TB of storage to play with. I also have a 250gb ssd which is plugged into the motherboard controller and this is used a my VM data store. ESXi is installed onto a usb stick.

I have my main file server which is a Centos 7 VM, the VM sits on the ssd. I have since created a new data store on my raid drives and created 1 large 6TB virtual drive and attached it to my file server VM. I have formatted this as ext4 and then mounted it to the file server in the location /var/nfs. I wanted to test the file transfers speeds to this raid so I mounted an nfs share from my synology to the location /mnt/synology on the server. I did a simple rsync of an mkv file from /mnt/synology/test to /var/nfs/test this is the full rsync command I used. Rsync -avz—progress —stats /mnt/synology/test/test.mkv /var/nfs/test

What I was seeing was a transfer speed of just 30MB/s which I thought was pretty poor.  I did a second test but this time I transferred the mkv file to my home directory which is on the ssd rather than the mounted raid drive and it transferred at 108MB/s which is more like it!

Cant work out why the raid is performing so slow? I know it doesn’t have a BBU but I didn’t think that what cause this much of an issue. I was looking at adding another drive to the raid but if performance is going to be this bad I’m tempted to ditch the raid and try a different setup.

Appreciate any advice

Thank you
