After setting up vRealize operations and seeing my first alert, a datastore alert about timing remaining bla bla.. Since there was only 1 VM built I just had to see what this was about.. sure enough, there is a VMKdump folder on the datastore containing dump files. OK, so I am familiar with what this is, but my understanding of it doesn't make any sense in regards to what I see.
First, the 6.5 documentation claims the files in the folder should be 2.5GB in size but I see that they are 3.5GB in size. whats up with this? I am at the latest 6.5 version, not the GA release. so perhaps this is an enhancement?
Next, I see KB article stating you can convert dump into a file on datastore, well, isn't this what I see now, files within a folder on a datastore ? They are already files.. so what is there to convert? Can someone please explain?
Finally, I'm assuming that after the hosts were rebooted, they automatically selected this datastore to store the coredumps, where were these dumps prior to me creating the datastores?
1) I don't remember seeing any warnings or alerts that this was needed prior to the datastore being added to the new cluster, and I didn't configure anything manually pertaining to this,
2) Is there any way to control what datastore these dumps are created on?
3) can these core dump files be deleted?
4) IF I configure network dump location can they then be deleted?
ALSO - HEADS UP FOR THOSE WHO MANAGE THIS WEB FORUM - you need to get a handle on the fact when a user tries to post, the options for the categories to post in is a real disaster, you need to straighten this out. I couldn't even select vSPhere 6.5 and when typing this into the search field it doesn't even return this as an option.
